Hanyang GSIS and UNE Forge AI Media Alliance in Seoul

Hanyang University’s Department of Global Strategy and Intelligence Studies (GSIS) has launched a new collaboration with US News Express (UNE) through the “UNE × GSIS AI Multimedia Lab” workshop held on campus last week, positioning Hanyang students at the center of AI-driven, multilingual storytelling for the Asia-Pacific.

The workshop marked the first public activity under the UNE–GSIS partnership with KJC International Inc., and aligns with APEC 2025 Korea’s theme, “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Connect, Innovate, Prosper,” which calls for open, digitally enabled, and inclusive growth across the region.

AI × News Media: Why Seoul, Why Now

Opening the round-table, Prof. Joohan Ryoo (류주한), Head of GSIS, described the Asia-Pacific as “the busiest testing ground for AI-assisted public communication,” emphasizing that the rapid deployment of AI in newsrooms must be matched by rigorous academic standards.

“If AI is going to write, translate, and recommend stories across APEC economies, universities must sit alongside newsrooms to set standards—not react to them,” he said.

The AI Multimedia Lab is designed as a joint platform where students can learn how emerging AI tools intersect with media ethics, strategic communication, and public trust.

UNE Seoul Station and Student Pipelines

Ms. Jennifer Liu, CEO of UNE News & KJC International Inc., announced that UNE will expand production, internship, and scholarship opportunities for Hanyang students as part of its “UNE Seoul Station” initiative.

“We want GSIS students to learn newsroom discipline, AI ethics, and market-driven content at the same time,” Liu said. “If APEC 2025 is about ‘connect, innovate, prosper,’ then media must also connect, innovate, and prosper — with young professionals trained here in Seoul.”

Students will gain hands-on experience producing AI-assisted, multilingual content for real audiences, with a focus on community storytelling, cross-border communication, and responsible use of generative AI.

Service as News, News as Service

Presenting the Lab concept, Prof. Ryoo explained that the collaboration grows from GSIS research on AI, innovation, and competitiveness, and is framed around the motto “service as news, news as service.”

The approach aims to:

  • Turn city-promotion and industry content into credible, useful information services;
  • Use journalism-style storytelling to highlight quality of life, health innovation, and community inclusion;
  • Embed AI tools under clear ethical, editorial, and educational guardrails.

Prof. Yaechan Lee, Head of Korean Studies, noted that Korean Studies and K-culture are now “media-first” arenas in which K-pop and Hallyu serve as entry points to deeper understanding of Korean cities, communities, and values. Working with an international outlet, he said, allows students to translate Korean stories into globally accessible, trustworthy content at a time when South Korea is in the international spotlight as APEC host.

Students at the Center

GSIS doctoral representatives Ms. Cao Qiongyin and Mr. Ki-Won Lee shared how AI and media skills can be integrated into tracks such as intelligence analysis, digital business, and health communication—equipping graduates to serve both public institutions and private firms.

Ms. Wang Yayi, an undergraduate from the College of Humanities, reflected on newsroom workflows and AI readiness for global employers, underlining that “AI literacy plus editorial discipline” will be core competencies for the next generation.

These pathways echo APEC 2025’s emphasis on preparing MSMEs and youth for the digital economy and ensuring that new technologies support inclusive growth.

Industry Voices and 2026 Outlook

Industry partner MEBO Group used the workshop to outline new scholarship opportunities for young researchers focusing on quality of life, aging, and health innovation—areas increasingly connected to data, storytelling, and public awareness.

Mr. Liu Gang, Vice President of Mebo International Department, highlighted how journalism and life-science communication are converging: “Trusted information is part of health infrastructure.”

Mr. Quan Qi-jian, Manager of MEBO Korea and Hanyang alumnus, encouraged students to “take one small step every day” in AI and media fields, pointing to his own journey from campus to cross-border management.

During a follow-up dinner discussion, MEBO leaders and GSIS representatives explored cooperation on the 2026 Asia-Pacific Entrepreneurship Forum and a life-science-themed film project for the APAC region—initiatives where the AI Multimedia Lab is expected to play a supporting role.

Guests also underscored that K-pop and the broader Korean Wave remain powerful soft power assets; combined with AI-enabled local media and university talent, they can amplify community stories and regional economies in line with APEC’s connectivity and innovation agenda.

Building Trusted AI Media from Campus

The UNE–GSIS AI Multimedia Lab positions Hanyang University as a hub where AI technology, strategic communication, and public-interest journalism meet.

“South Korea is hosting APEC,” Prof. Ryoo said in closing. “We should also lead on AI-ready, trusted media. With UNE and our industry partners, we can train students, support local communities, and show how APAC universities connect strategy, intelligence, and real-world demands.”
