Jesi Taps into Cartoon Network-Era Nostalgia on Conceptual Alt-Rap EP Channel 601

Blending alt-rap stylings with internet-era memory and introspective storytelling, British-Nigerian artist jesi (John Esin) returns with Channel 601 — a six-track project that reimagines childhood nostalgia as creative fuel.

Named after the Cartoon Network channel number from jesi’s youth, Channel 601 filters formative pop culture through the lens of modern underground rap. The result is a sonically rich and concept-driven EP, balancing vulnerability, spontaneity, and technical writing. Listeners can expect everything from the loose and unpredictable (“Johnny Test”, “Bladder”) to introspective, sharply constructed moments (“Lord of the Flies”, “BSL”), all tied together with a sense of youthful clarity and digital-age influence.

This whole project represents something that shaped me and my creativity… Channel 601 was Cartoon Network. I spent hours watching it, to the point where part of the logo was burned into our old TV,” jesi explains. “This is about being the purest version of myself — the kid who knew exactly what he liked before the world told him otherwise.

The standout single “Bayern Munich” — which samples Jim Legxacy — premiered on DJ AG’s livestream and quickly caught traction, racking up over 250,000 views. Produced by long-time collaborators Louis Fox and Harry Wright, the track balances cultural fluency and lyrical confidence with sleek, unconventional production.

Known for his ability to move between offbeat flows and personal insight, jesi continues to carve his own lane in the UK’s alternative rap scene. Channel 601 builds on the momentum of earlier projects like Prescribed Persistence, which garnered support from BBC Radio, Rinse FM, Wordplay Magazine, Off License Magazine, and Public Pressure.

For fans of Fimiguerrero, YT, Namesbliss, Lord Apex, and Skepta, Channel 601 offers a cohesive experience that’s just as playful as it is profound — a look back at what shaped the artist, and a confident step forward in his sound.
