In an era of increasing screen time, digital eye strain has become a pervasive issue for professionals, students, and creatives alike. While tablets have grown in size and power, the fundamental viewing experience has remained largely unchanged—until now. TCL Mobile NA has announced a major advancement with its TCL NXTPAPER 14, a device that prioritizes long-term eye comfort without sacrificing performance.
The new tablet features the latest iteration of TCL’s proprietary NXTPAPER display technology, designed to simulate the tactile and visual properties of paper while significantly reducing blue light exposure. We spoke with Rob Manfredo, spokesperson for TCL Mobile NA, to discuss this development milestone and the company’s vision for a healthier digital experience.
Q: TCL Mobile NA has just announced the NXTPAPER 14 as a new development milestone. What was the primary motivation behind focusing so heavily on “eye-comfort-focused display technologies” for this release?
Rob Manfredo:
NXTPAPER 14 sports the largest screen of our line up and offers an amazing platform for content of all types. Whether reading manga, or watching videos, this tablet has the performance you want and the focus on eye comfort that all power users need, but maybe never realized.
Q: The NXTPAPER 14 features a matte, anti-glare layer designed to simulate paper. Can you explain the specific engineering behind this surface treatment and how it benefits users during long-form reading or detailed design work?
Rob Manfredo:
NXTPAPER is a unique and proprietary screen technology that was designed by TCL. We put our decades of experience designing and building LED displays to work, creating a solution that uses multiple layers of nano etched glass and special films to mitigate harmful blue light while maintaining core performance users expect from a TCL display.
Q: With a massive 14.3-inch 2.4K display, this tablet offers a significant workspace. Who is the ideal user for this device, and how does the larger screen size enhance their daily professional or creative workflows?
Rob Manfredo:
NXTPAPER 14 is a fully-functioning Android tablet, so it can handle most software applications. That huge screen is wrapped in a slim and durable frame, which makes it ideal for use on the go. Whether you’re a sales rep, closing deals and editing contracts at a client’s office or an architect revising plans and schematics while at a build site, the tablet is ideal for most any professional who wants a more natural, paper-like experience in their digital tools. And don’t forget, it has all the leisure uses covered too. Video, books, games, and magazines all look great on this screen.
Q: The device incorporates three distinct viewing modes—Ink Paper, Color Paper, and Regular View. How do these modes differ in practice, and why was it important to offer such adaptive calibration for different activities?
Rob Manfredo:
The three modes all have unique advantages, and their usage is all about user preference. If you want an e-reader experience, with high contrast text and adaptive brightness for reading books and long form stories, Ink Paper is the way to go. For those that want added color and detail but plan to spend a lot of time consuming our creating, the softer color matching of Color Paper is ideal, and for the user looking for a familiar, full color internet or video call, etc… normal tablet experience, well you guessed it, Regular mode is the way to go.
Q: You’ve mentioned that this is part of a “multi-year initiative.” Looking ahead, how does TCL plan to continue evolving its display technology to address the growing global concern around digital eye health?
Rob Manfredo:
We’ve made such great strides since 2021 when we NXTPAPER 1.0 came to market. There has been plenty of reporting on how the ubiquity of digital screens is impacting vision across every demographic in every region. There is no perfect solution, but as the authority in design and development of display technology, we at TCL believe that we can help to reduce some of the risk by deploying solutions that are a little easier on our eyes.
The launch of the NXTPAPER 14 underscores TCL’s commitment to “humanizing” technology. By merging advanced hardware engineering with a clear focus on user well-being, the company is addressing one of the most critical challenges of the modern digital age: how to stay connected without compromising our health. As demand for eye-friendly devices grows, TCL’s innovative approach positions it as a leader in the next generation of display technology.
