Shaun Tomson Turns Surfer’s Code Into a Global Movement, While Reviving Instinct

World champion surfer Shaun Tomson is marking the 20th anniversary of Surfer’s Code with more than a new edition of the book that inspired readers around the world. He is using the milestone to launch a broader movement centered on hope, purpose, resilience and personal responsibility, while also bringing his iconic surf brand Instinct back into the spotlight.

First published in 2006, Surfer’s Code quickly made an impact far beyond the surf world. When the book was first released, the Los Angeles Times reviewed it in a feature titled All’s Well That Rides Swells and included it in its Favorite Books of 2006 selection, a notable moment that helped confirm the book’s reach beyond the beach and into mainstream culture.

Now, with a 20th anniversary edition set for release, Tomson is revisiting that message with fresh reflections drawn from decades of experience in and out of the water. But for Tomson, this is not simply a book relaunch. It is the beginning of a larger conversation.

Through a series of live events tied to the new edition, Tomson hopes to bring people together around values that still matter in a world that often feels fractured and uncertain. At the heart of the project is a simple idea: people are hungry for meaning, connection and a set of principles they can actually live by.

That belief has long been central to Surfer’s Code. Built around the words “I will,” the book offers a philosophy rooted in discipline, courage, character and accountability. Over the years, its message has resonated with readers well outside surfing, including business leaders, students, athletes and anyone searching for a clearer sense of purpose.

Tomson’s own life gives the message weight. A world champion in 1977, he has spent decades sharing lessons drawn from the ocean and from personal hardship, using surfing as a framework for resilience, perspective and growth. What began as a surf book became something larger: a guide to navigating life with intention.

At the same time, Tomson is also relaunching Instinct, the surf brand he founded in 1979 and helped build into one of the most recognizable labels of its era. The return of Instinct is not being positioned as nostalgia alone. Instead, it reflects the same values-driven spirit behind Surfer’s Code, reconnecting the brand with its roots while introducing it to a new generation.

Together, the anniversary edition of Surfer’s Code and the relaunch of Instinct signal a new chapter for Tomson, one that blends legacy with renewed purpose. For longtime surfers, it is a reminder of what made his voice so enduring in the first place. For a broader audience, it is an invitation to connect with a message that feels just as relevant now as it did when the Los Angeles Times first recognized the book back in 2006.
