The 9-track project arrives September 4, capping a year-long visual and sonic journey
DENVER, CO –– On September 4th, Denver’s emergent independent pop artist, Jaiel will release her debut album, The Blooming Hearts Club (Little Light Records). It’s a 9-track coming of age story about moving from grief into collective joy and power.
In this full-length studio debut, Jaiel takes on the nuanced and complicated nature of grief and the often tumultuous journey between girlhood and womanhood. She asks the question “what does it mean to come-of-age in a world that is crumbling and begging to be reborn?”
With the relatable, emotional depth of a Terry McMillan novel, The Blooming Hearts Club’s poignant resonance feels like a series of diary entries. Jaiel moves beyond the solipsistic “sad girl” archetype, using the visual motif of an empty house as a blank canvas for the radical act of blossoming in the midst of immense loss.
The emotional arc, “from grief to growth,” is the spine of the project, with the title referring to a safe place to process loss. The album’s sonic and visual narrative follows Jaiel as she leaves an old life behind, feels through the heartbreak, and ultimately creates a healing space that transforms grief into strength and possibility. The symbol of the Blooming Heart signifies renewal after hardship, where pain is transformed into new beginnings.
“The loss of the last several years has affected so many of us and on so many different levels,” Jaiel said. “…and through every way imaginable. Loss of homes, loss of loved ones, loss of a life you once knew or believed was possible, loss of friends, loss of clarity and the list goes on.
Through my own grief journey I’ve chatted with and connected with so many women and folks in my life who now also find themselves in this in-between space. Grieving and learning to let go of what once was…while also being NOT fully sure of what is to come.”
The project, co produced by Merch (AME Industries and Dreamspace Studios) and Jaiel, is anchored by illustrative production and layered vocal arrangements, with mixing by multi-platinum and Emmy nominated engineer, Daniela Rivera (Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey) and mastering by Grammy Award-winner, Anna Frick (Billy Strings, Wood & Wire, Justin Moses). Musically, the album blends pop immediacy with the warmth of R&B, drawing on some of Jaiel’s earliest musical influences, India.Arie, Destiny’s Child & Ariana Grande. Her training in church, classical music, musical theater, and as a front-woman in a funk/jazz band gave her the foundation to blend her intricate musical sensibilities with a sound that resonates with today’s pop hits.
In a state where Black residents make up only about 9% of the population, Jaiel defiantly takes up space as an unapologetically Black, American pop artist in Colorado. Producing a sound that strikes a chord with people of all backgrounds, she’s established a dedicated and passionate home base. She made history as the first Black woman to graduate with a music degree from Colorado College, turning her original academic thesis project, Black Girl Songs, into a celebrated body of work, re-released as Black Girl Songs Deluxe in 2025.
This album release will be accompanied by the music video for “The Breakdown Song” featuring Denver artist, Monica the Great, co-produced with House of Kodo and directed by Anika Kan Grevstad.
The album’s singles trace the journey of the narrative, with the lead single “Take Care,” prophetically penned in 2020 and released earlier this summer, as a tender meditation on letting go, framed as an act of compassion rather than defeat. “Better,” released in July, is a high-energy anthem about stepping into your power–a song The GRID Magazine called “bright,” and “made for singing loudly and moving forward without apology.” “The Breakdown Song,” illustrates the collective support offered by the metaphorical “Blooming Hearts Club,” which listeners can actually join in real life on Jaiel’s website, www.jaielmusic.com.
“At the time, life was going well,” she said about writing the album’s first single. “I was happily in my relationship, family and work were going well and I was just writing what sounded cool,” Jaiel explains. “It wasn’t until my life completely flipped upside down… just so much trauma and grief…that I re-heard the song and it clicked. Oh, this is telling my story.”
For Jaiel, the album is an invitation. “What I want people to feel is permission to let go, and to feel held in that process,” she says. “Because it’s a tough process. But you have to let go…pun intended…in order to bloom.”
