Felida Villarreal, President and CEO of the Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement (VIDA), offers a proven solution. VIDA utilizes a holistic support model that combines financial aid with high-interaction case management to empower the Rio Grande Valley workforce. Hispanic Executive recently named Villarreal one of its 2025 Leading Latinas. Today, we sit down with her to discuss this recognition, her strategic approach to removing barriers, and how VIDA creates lasting economic mobility for Latino students in South Texas.
Q: Hispanic Executive recently named you a 2025 Leading Latina. How does this national recognition highlight the potential and talent emerging from the Rio Grande Valley?
Felida Villarreal: Receiving this recognition is a great honor. However, I see it as a recognition of our entire community. The Rio Grande Valley is full of talented, hardworking people who are capable of achieving great things when given the opportunity. I hope this award helps shine a light on our region and shows that leaders and innovators can come from anywhere. I also hope it inspires young people to believe that they can achieve their goals without leaving the community they call home.
Q: South Texas currently faces a major gap between high industry demand and widespread poverty. How does VIDA bridge this divide and build a stronger local workforce?
Felida Villarreal: VIDA helps connect people with long-term, life-changing careers by providing education, training, and support. We work closely with employers to understand which jobs are in demand and prepare students for those careers. At the same time, we help students overcome the challenges that often keep them from finishing school. When students graduate, businesses gain skilled employees, families earn higher incomes, and our community becomes stronger.
Q: Wraparound services are a core part of your model. Why are resources like childcare and transportation just as critical as tuition assistance for adult learners?
Felida Villarreal: Paying for tuition is only one part of the journey. Many of our students are parents, work full-time, or care for family members. If they cannot afford childcare or do not have reliable transportation, they may miss classes or, unfortunately, drop out altogether. By helping with these everyday challenges, we give students the support they need to stay focused and finish their education.
Q: Under your leadership, VIDA students achieve graduation rates exceeding 80 percent. What specific aspects of your high-interaction case management drive these exceptional outcomes?
Felida Villarreal: Our career counselors build strong relationships with each student. They meet with students regularly, help them solve problems, connect them to resources, and encourage them throughout their educational journey. We become an extended part of their supportive community. We do not wait until a student is struggling. We stay involved every step of the way. That personal support helps students stay motivated and successfully reach graduation.
Q: You have aggressively expanded federal and private grant funding since becoming CEO. How does this financial strategy ensure long-term sustainability for your programs?
Felida Villarreal: We work hard to build partnerships with government agencies, foundations, and private organizations so we are not dependent on just one funding source. This allows us to serve more students, develop innovative programs, and continue providing high-quality services as community needs evolve. A great example is our partnership with the OpenAI Foundation, which is helping us expand access to digital literacy training and AI tools for our students. By introducing emerging technology into our workforce programs, we are preparing participants with the skills they need to succeed in today’s economy and the jobs of the future. Strong partnerships like these help us create lasting opportunities and economic mobility for the people we serve.
Q: You actively encourage young professionals to build their careers locally rather than relocating to major cities. What advice do you give to students who want to make a meaningful impact in their own backyards?
Felida Villarreal: My advice is to believe in the value of your community. You do not have to leave home to build a successful career or make a difference. The Rio Grande Valley has many opportunities for people who are willing to work hard and lead with purpose. Invest in your education, stay connected to your community, and use your talents to help create a better future for those around you.
