Exclusive First-Look Event in Dallas to Showcase New Ingmar Bergman Documentary Featuring Rare SMU Archival Footage

Acclaimed filmmaker Keith Maitland presents an intimate preview and conversation honoring the legendary director’s legacy and Dallas’ role in preserving it

DALLAS, TX — A distinguished group of arts patrons, cultural leaders, and film enthusiasts will gather in downtown Dallas on May 20, 2026, for an exclusive first-look presentation of a new documentary exploring the life, legacy, and artistic influence of legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman.

The event will showcase select footage from the upcoming documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Keith Maitland, known for his critically recognized works including Tower, Dear Mr. Brody, and The Eyes of Me. The film draws from rare archival footage captured at Southern Methodist University during Bergman’s historic 1981 visit as the inaugural recipient of the Meadows Award. It offers a uniquely intimate perspective on one of cinema’s most influential figures.

Hosted at the historic U.S. Post Office & Courthouse in downtown Dallas, the evening will provide guests with a rare opportunity to experience early footage from the film and engage directly with the creative team behind the project.

“This documentary highlights the contrast between a master filmmaker’s profound influence on cinema, and a remarkable moment in Dallas’ cultural history,” said Maitland. “What’s most amazing is that this never-before-seen footage has been living in an archive at SMU for over 40 years. With this film we’re unearthing an unseen chapter in Dallas history.”

The evening will feature a live conversation between Maitland and Swedish producer André Persson, offering insight into the film’s development, the significance of Bergman’s visit to Dallas, and the enduring relevance of his work. Guests will also enjoy a reception with light bites and beverages, including Valhalla Aquavit.

Presented in partnership with the Honorary Consulate of Sweden Dallas and the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce Texas, the event underscores the international cultural ties between Sweden and North Texas while celebrating Dallas’ role in preserving important moments in film history.

The May 20 gathering also serves as a fundraising event supporting the continued production of the documentary. It offers attendees an opportunity to contribute to a project that bridges global cinematic heritage with local cultural legacy.

About Keith Maitland

Keith Maitland is an acclaimed documentary filmmaker based in Austin, known for blending innovative visual storytelling with deeply human narratives. A graduate of Plano Senior High and the University of Texas, he gained national recognition for Tower, an Emmy and Critics Choice Award-winning film that premiered at SXSW where it won the Documentary Jury Prize, the Lone Star Award, and the Audience Award. The film was short-listed for the Academy Award and landed Maitland a nomination for Texan of the Year in the Dallas Morning News. Tower balanced emotional highs and lows while taking formal risks, using rotoscope animation and firsthand accounts to revisit the 1966 University of Texas shooting. His additional work includes Dear Mr. Brody and The Eyes of Me, both noted for their emotional depth and distinctive style. All three of Maitland’s films played at the Dallas International Film Fest in their release years with both Tower and Dear Mr. Brody taking the top documentary prize. Maitland has contributed to documentary education and storytelling initiatives, and his work has been featured on major platforms including HBO, Netflix, PBS and at dozens of domestic and international film festivals. His latest project, a documentary on legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, draws from never-before-seen archival footage captured at Southern Methodist University, offering a rare and intimate perspective on one of cinema’s most influential figures.
