Finding Healing in Nature: An Executive Q&A with Cody Kenney on “Out of the Ashes”

Many individuals struggle to overcome the deep emotional scars left by a dysfunctional childhood. Unresolved anger and family secrets often carry over into adulthood, blocking personal growth and inner peace. Finding a practical path to forgiveness frequently requires stepping away from daily routines and seeking solitude in a grounding environment.

To explore how natural surroundings facilitate emotional healing, we spoke with nature enthusiast and author Cody Kenney. In her debut novel, Out of the Ashes, Kenney uses the restorative power of the wilderness to help her protagonist, Clair Donovan, navigate a painful family history. In this interview, we discuss the complexities of familial bonds, the journey toward spiritual awareness, and the impact of nature on personal redemption.

Q: Out of the Ashes follows Clair Donovan as she returns to her childhood ranch to claim her inheritance. What inspired you to use the rugged landscape of the Pacific Northwest as the backdrop for her healing journey?

Cody Kenney: I grew up loving the mountains. I have ridden my horses all over the Pacific Northwest. Mt. Rainier is a beautiful rugged landscape. At a young age my family and I rode horses over 200 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. I experienced the profound effect of a quiet trail that can heal many things.

Q: Clair is a successful executive who must confront a dysfunctional past and long-buried family secrets. Why was it important to contrast her high-paced corporate life with the solitude of the wilderness?

Cody Kenney:The corporate life did not give Clair time to deal with her past. When she returned to the ranch to a slower pace she had time to reflect on what she needed to heal.

Q: You spend a significant amount of time hiking and exploring the outdoors. How did your personal experiences with spiritual renewal in nature directly shape Clair’s emotional trajectory in the novel?

Cody Kenney:I found that being in nature was a different world. After spending time with nature you get a strong sense that all was created by something bigger than us. I think Clair found in her adult life she had been searching for an emotional connection that she did not get as a child.  Coming back to people she trusted and the solitude of the ranch and finding spiritual awareness helped her to overcome her anger issues that had been buried for years.

Q: Forgiveness serves as a central theme of the story, especially regarding Clair’s deep-rooted anger and resentment. How does the narrative address the difficult process of letting go of childhood trauma?

Cody Kenney: It expresses our need for spiritual guidance and willingness to let go of the things we cannot control.

Q: As a first-time author, what primary message do you want readers to take away regarding the management of complex family dynamics and the pursuit of spiritual awareness?

Cody Kenney: I am sure there are a lot of readers out there who have experienced the same childhood as Claire and maybe in their adult life also. I hope they find the truths of this book to help them heal. It is not only a spiritual journey but a journey of hope, love, and finding true happiness.

The themes explored in Out of the Ashes highlight the critical role that environment plays in emotional recovery. By stepping into nature, individuals gain the perspective needed to confront past traumas and untangle complicated family relationships. Kenney’s narrative demonstrates that genuine forgiveness requires both personal courage and a strong connection to the natural world.

As modern life becomes increasingly fast-paced and disconnected, the need for grounding narratives will continue to grow. Literature that bridges the gap between human struggles and natural healing provides a valuable roadmap for those seeking inner peace. Kenney’s debut novel offers a compelling look at how confronting the past serves as the first step toward building a healthier future.
