When people hear the word “homeless,” many see a problem to solve. When they hear “prisoner,” they often think of someone’s worst mistake. But through our ministry, we have learned that behind every addiction, every homeless tent, every prison sentence, and every hardened exterior is a person deeply loved by God.
That conviction is what led us to establish Refreshing Oasis, a faith-based ministry dedicated to bringing hope, compassion, and the love of Jesus Christ to people who are often forgotten by society. It is also the reason we wrote our book, The Least of These: Finding Jesus Among the Broken.
A Ministry Beyond the Church Walls
Refreshing Oasis was founded on a simple belief: the Church is called to go where the hurting are.
Each month, we travel into communities where many people would rather not go. We serve those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and on the streets of Philadelphia, including Kensington. We visit prisons to encourage men and women who are searching for hope and a new beginning. We distribute food, clothing, hygiene items, and practical necessities, but more importantly, we build relationships.
We believe every person deserves to be seen, heard, and reminded that they have value.
Many people we meet have experienced abuse, addiction, rejection, mental illness, or unimaginable loss. Yet time after time, we have witnessed lives transformed simply because someone chose to sit down, listen, pray, and love them without judgment.
Why We Wrote The Least of These
The stories in The Least of These are real.
They are not simply stories about homelessness or prison ministry. They are stories about God’s grace meeting people in unexpected places.
Over the years, we have encountered individuals whose lives challenged our assumptions and stretched our faith. We have watched people whom society had written off discover hope again. We have seen friendships develop across barriers of race, background, addiction, and social status.
These experiences changed us.
We realized that many Christians desire to serve but often don’t know where to begin. Others feel fear or uncertainty when confronted with poverty, addiction, or incarceration.
We wrote this book to encourage readers to move beyond those fears and discover what happens when we begin seeing people through the eyes of Christ.
How Ministry Has Changed Our Lives
Serving the homeless and those in prison has transformed our understanding of the Gospel.
It has taught us that compassion is not a project—it is a relationship.
We have learned that ministry is rarely about having all the answers. Often it is about showing up consistently, listening well, and demonstrating God’s love through faithful presence.
Some of the people we set out to help have, in reality, ministered to us.
Their courage, honesty, resilience, and hunger for hope have strengthened our own faith and reminded us that God’s grace reaches every corner of society.
Jesus consistently sought those whom others ignored. He welcomed the outcast, touched the untouchable, and offered hope to those who believed they had none.
That same mission continues today.
A Message of Hope
Our prayer is that readers will come away with more than inspiration.
We hope they will be challenged.
We hope they will begin looking beyond appearances and labels.
We hope they will recognize that every person has dignity because every person is created in the image of God.
Whether someone serves in a church, leads a ministry, volunteers in their community, or simply wants to live out their faith more intentionally, we believe there is a place for everyone in God’s work of restoration.
Small acts of kindness can change lives.
A conversation can open a door to healing.
A meal can become the beginning of friendship.
A simple “I’m praying for you” can remind someone they are not forgotten.

Refreshing Oasis continues to serve vulnerable communities through homeless outreach, prison ministry, mentorship, and practical acts of compassion. Our mission is to restore hope by sharing the love of Christ in both word and action.
