Finding Purpose in the Shadows: Author Norma R. Crutcher on Faith, Healing, and The Unconscious Witness

Unforeseen medical crises, personal loss, and suffering often shake an individual's spiritual foundation. When life takes an abrupt detour into physical vulnerability or a hospital room, feelings of isolation, fear, and doubt can quickly overwhelm hope. In these quiet and painful moments, many struggle to recognize meaning or divine presence amidst deep adversity.

Ordained minister, speaker, and author Norma R. Crutcher addresses these pivotal moments by helping individuals uncover enduring spiritual purpose during their darkest seasons. Alongside her husband, Ron Crutcher, she co-founded Moments in the Master’s Hand, a ministry dedicated to teaching Scripture and nurturing believers through life’s storms. Following the international acclaim of her debut work, her book The Unconscious Witness explores how faith and divine sovereignty operate even when human faculties fail. In this Executive Q&A, Crutcher discusses the inspiration behind her writing, the realities of trusting God in hardship, and how personal trials can become powerful testimonies.

Q: In The Unconscious Witness, the story centers on a profound experience of vulnerability and healing. What inspired you to explore the intersection of medical crises and divine intervention in this book?

Norma R. Crutcher: There was a young lady that attended our bible study who shared her experience of being in a coma for some months. She told how she was able to hear everything being said around her and how frustrating it was that she couldn’t respond or converse with them. I started imagining how that experience could be taken to a spiritual level of understanding of God’s presence in our lives to heal our past and give hope for our future.

Q: Many believers find it challenging to maintain faith when confronted with silence or prolonged suffering. What core biblical truth do you emphasize to help readers navigate their own quiet trials?

Norma R. Crutcher: The biblical core truth that I want readers to remember is that God is with us and will never leave nor forsake us. Wherever we are or whatever we do. Whatever we are going through or have gone through we have never been alone. He sees us, He hears us, He loves us. When we come to that understanding then we can begin to sense His presence in the midst of our situation which gives hope and comfort. But also, knowing His presence is always with us will correct our behavior before Him because He is Holy.

Q: Your ministry work frequently connects you with people through revivals, conferences, and workshops. How have real-life pastoral encounters shaped the themes and characters in your writing?

Norma R. Crutcher: Almost everyone struggles with one or more debilitating issues in life at one time or another. There’s unforgiveness, past and present hurt, disappointments, shame, depression, and/or guilt. We usually wallow in one or more of these until we remember to pray to the One who can give comfort, peace and forgiveness to our soul. Through prayer we can reconcile relationships, heal hearts, and calm our spirits.

But, unfortuately after all is well and we feel better we tend to shove God in the back of our hearts until the next time needed and believe me the next time always comes. We need to place God on the forefront of our heart so that we can remain hopeful and calm in the midst of the struggle knowing that all will be well.

Q: Following the international success of your debut, Moments in the Master’s Hand, what specific message did you feel compelled to deliver to your audience through The Unconscious Witness?

Norma R. Crutcher: There are two messages: One is reconciling one’s past to heal our future and knowing that God is and has always been with us.

There’s a quote that says, “ Don’t look back; you’re not going that way.” But if you don’t look back and reconcile your past, you create baggage that becomes too heavy to carry into your future. It does not matter how successful you become, your future will be affected consciously and/or unconsciously in one way or another.

“When you go through deep waters, God says He will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.” ( Isaiah 43 2-3 NLT)

Q: Living in a blended family with four adult children and six grandchildren brings a unique set of life perspectives. How does your family life inform your approach to ministry, storytelling, and discipleship?

Norma R. Crutcher: Ron and I both know without a doubt that the Lord brought us together through a friend since we lived in different states. After two years of dating long distance I was blessed to find a job in the state where he lived. It was another two years before the Lord said it was time to marry which gave our families time to get to know each other slowly without the threat of being thrown together. My son and I arrived in Ohio while my daughter stayed in Illinois going to college. We arrived in time to help Ron and a few others build a church which was pretty incredible.

We now have seven grandchildren, praise God and we’ve been married now for over thirty years so we’ve had some time to actually blend together as a family. It was a challenge in the beginning when our children were younger, especially Ron’s children. They weren’t used to him having another woman in his life. They had to learn that I wasn’t there to replace their mother because they already had a mom. Ron stepped up to the male figure that my children needed to see, especially my son, kind and disciplined since their father wasn’t close by. We had to learn unconditional love for one another and we have. We’ve gone through a lot as a family, health issues and life changes. Our children and their families live away from us but we communicate almost daily and they all love the Lord.

Q: What practical advice would you give to someone who feels that their current physical, emotional, or spiritual limitations have sidelined them from fulfilling God's purpose?

Norma R. Crutcher: Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. Ephesians 3:20

God is able to use anyone who makes himself available and is willing to surrender their life to Him.

I once heard a story of a lady who had Multiple Sclerosis and was in a wheelchair partially paralyzed. She wanted to work in the church but her pastor told her she was useless because of her condition. She didn’t allow what he said to discourage her. She believed God still had a purpose for her life. That pastor left and another came in his place. One day the pastor said he believed they were to start a children’s church but there weren’t any children in the church. The lady immediately spoke up and said she had two children and that she would work to make it happen. The pastor was skeptical but said, “okay.” She started with her two children.

By faith she in her wheelchair convinced a bus company owner to lend them a bus on Sundays for the children who were going to come to the church. He couldn’t see how she was going to do it but after some convincing he agreed and she built their children’s church to the place that they need a few more buses. Not only did the children come but the bus owner, his family and all his employees and their families were saved and attended that church because of her faith and diligence.

Finding spiritual grounding during unexpected trials requires intentional trust and a deeper perspective on human suffering. Stories that illuminate divine purpose in times of physical weakness remind believers that their most vulnerable moments can yield lasting spiritual clarity. Through authentic teaching and scriptural encouragement, individuals can shift their focus from immediate pain to eternal hope.

As individuals and families face increasing uncertainty in today’s world, faith-centered literature offers a vital compass for emotional and spiritual renewal. Norma R. Crutcher’s dedication to teaching Scripture and sharing faith-filled narratives continues to equip readers with the resilience needed to see God’s hand in every season of life.
