Harmonic Design Launches TallTale Games, a Browser-Based Virtual Tabletop Focused on Fast Setup and Shared Dice Rolls

Harmonic Design, a web development studio based in Hamilton, Ontario, has released TallTale Games (https://talltale.games), a virtual tabletop (VTT) platform for playing tabletop roleplaying games online. The platform runs entirely in the browser, with no downloads or installation required, and is designed to get a group from account creation to a live session in under two minutes.

TallTale enters a market currently led by Roll20 and Foundry VTT, but takes a different approach: rather than emphasizing automation and content libraries, it focuses on a small set of core tools and on recreating the shared experience of rolling dice at a physical table.

Dice in TallTale are rendered as 3D physics objects. Players press and hold to charge a roll, then release to send the dice tumbling across the screen — and every player in the room sees the same roll resolve at the same moment. The system supports standard dice notation, including advantage, disadvantage, and expressions such as 4d6kh3, with individual die results shown alongside totals.

“Most virtual tabletops focus on tools. TallTale focuses on moments,” said Dylan Forde, founder of Harmonic Design and creator of TallTale Games. “Many Game Masters don’t need an hour of setup to run a session. They need to create a game, invite a party, and get rolling — and they should still get that half-second of anticipation before the die lands.”

Themed Rooms

Game rooms are available in several visual themes that react to dice results: a gothic-horror Flesh Room, a neon Cyberpunk Room, a Space Room, a Tavern Room, and a minimalist Black Room for groups who prefer no visual effects. A natural 20 or a critical failure triggers a theme-specific animation visible to the whole table. A reduced-motion setting is available for all users.

GM Tools

The platform’s remaining features cover the basics of running a session online:

  • A collaborative whiteboard and map tool, available as soon as a room opens, with free draw, shapes, text, tokens, undo/redo, auto-save, and real-time sync to all players
  • One-click fog of war for hiding and revealing areas of the map
  • An initiative tracker that prompts all players to roll simultaneously
  • In-room character sheets covering stats, skills, spells, equipment, conditions, and notes, with uploaded portraits automatically cropped into map tokens; GMs can view any character’s sheet during play
  • NPC creation, pings, player board permissions, and mobile and touch support

TallTale is system-agnostic and can be used with Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, Shadowdark, homebrew systems, and others. Core features, including dice rolling and board navigation, are WCAG compliant and usable via keyboard or screen reader.

Pricing

Players can join games at no cost. Game Masters pay $10 CAD per year for unlimited private game rooms. According to the studio, the fee is set to cover server and maintenance costs.
