In a recent interview, Ian stated that “Relevance is something people chase in this business…trying to be accepted in terms of style or fashion. But from the beginning, the band (Deep Purple) avoided that. We decided not to be fashionable. That may sound strange, but chasing trends only keeps you ‘in’ for a short time. Next year, you’re out. That’s what you see in pop music a lot.
Our kind of music is harder to define, but the key is being true to ourselves. We have to express what’s inside, not follow trends.“
