Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board Expands Global Footprint with Strategic Engagements in Sri Lanka and at the USTOA Annual Conference

Celebrated as the Heart of Incredible India, Madhya Pradesh stands as a living tapestry of heritage, culture, spirituality, and wilderness. Home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the iconic Khajuraho Group of Monuments, the ancient Sanchi Stupa, and the prehistoric Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, the state offers timeless windows into India’s evolution. Its regal cities—Gwalior, Orchha, and Mandu—echo with artistic brilliance and architectural grandeur, while sacred centres like Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga attract millions of pilgrims each year. Wildlife enthusiasts from around the world travel to experience the state’s remarkable tiger habitats across Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura, and Panna, placing Madhya Pradesh among India’s most celebrated conservation landscapes.

Carrying forward this rich legacy, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) recently strengthened its global outreach through two important international engagements: a high-level official visit to Sri Lanka and a strong representation at the USTOA Annual Conference & Marketplace 2025 in the United States. Both platforms provided opportunities to showcase Madhya Pradesh’s diverse tourism offerings, its sustainability commitments, and its expanding global partnerships.

In November 2025, a distinguished MPTB delegation led by Dr. Ilayaraja T., Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation, visited Sri Lanka in an effort to deepen cultural and tourism ties between the two destinations. The interactions centred around shared Buddhist heritage, with the revered Sanchi Stupa—one of the world’s oldest Buddhist monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—being a focal point of interest for Sri Lankan travellers. During the visit, the delegation held meaningful discussions with Hon. Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sri Lanka, and H.E. Shri Santosh Jha, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, as well as Rev. Banagala Upatissa Thero, President of the Mahabodhi Society Sri Lanka, and Mr. Tissa, Governor of the North West Province (Maligawa, Kurunegala, Sri Lanka). They also engaged with key tourism stakeholders, airline partners, and tour operators. The conversations explored collaborative promotional campaigns, curated Buddhist and spiritual circuits, and themed itineraries linking Sanchi, Mandu, and Chitrakoot with Sri Lanka’s own Ramayana-related sites. This visit strengthened South Asian tourism cooperation and showcased Madhya Pradesh’s growing offerings in adventure tourism, rural homestays, wellness experiences, and culture-driven itineraries.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism’s presence at the USTOA Annual Conference & Marketplace, held from December 1–5, 2025, at the Gaylord National Resort in Maryland, further expanded its international visibility. Representing MPTB, Mr. Vivek Jude, Deputy Director (Events & Marketing), engaged with more than 150 leading North American tour operators, presenting Madhya Pradesh as a compelling standalone destination for long-haul travellers. Discussions highlighted the state’s world-class wildlife experiences, heritage circuits that include Khajuraho, Orchha, Mandu, and Gwalior Fort, and its UNESCO treasures such as the Bhimbetka Rock Shelters. Mr. Jude also showcased emerging experiential offerings, including tribal cultural interactions, textile and craft trails, boutique stays in restored heritage properties, and wellness retreats that draw on the state’s natural landscapes. There was notable interest from U.S. operators seeking offbeat, culturally rich, and nature-centric itineraries, reinforcing Madhya Pradesh’s growing appeal in the North American market.

Sustainability continues to anchor Madhya Pradesh’s tourism development model. The state’s pioneering Ecotourism Policy, community-led initiatives, and conservation-first approach are reshaping the visitor experience. Solar-powered eco-lodges, zero-waste zones, and community-run homestays in regions such as Madla, and Sabarvani underline the state’s emphasis on responsible tourism. Madhya Pradesh’s leadership in tiger conservation—supported by advanced monitoring technologies and community involvement—has earned global recognition. Rural tourism hubs like Ladpura Khas, Khokhara, and Madla are empowering local communities while offering travellers immersive cultural experiences. Technological innovations, including AR-enabled heritage tours and smart crowd-management systems at prominent sites, are positioning Madhya Pradesh as a sustainable and intelligent tourism destination aligned with GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) standards. Through its engagements in Sri Lanka and at the USTOA Conference, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has demonstrated a clear and confident vision—one that honours heritage, empowers communities, conserves nature, and delivers transformational travel experiences. As global travellers increasingly seek meaningful, immersive, and environmentally conscious journeys, Madhya Pradesh stands ready to welcome the world with its unparalleled blend of culture, wilderness, and soul-stirring stories.
