In this interview, we sit down with Gavin Boulware to discuss their mission, the importance of vulnerability, and how they are changing the narrative around fatherhood today.
Q: What was the primary motivation behind launching the Black Dads Club, and why was it important for you to prioritize a "dad’s perspective" in your conversations?
Gavin B: Funny enough this podcast started off as a political, business history, relationship, music gumbo podcast. Mike and I had different visions but we always knew that the growth of the Black Community was the center of our focus. We’re 18 months into the pod and I'm ready to quit, because I had a photography podcast that was doing fairly well and we were just- yapping. My wife is pregnant with our first son and my master plan was to come back in a few weeks and blame me for quitting this podcast on my Son. The first day back, we hit record and I immediately tell Mike ‘it’s so much you didn't tell me about having a newborn’ and Mike grins and goes ‘if I told you everything, you would’ve never had kids’.
That quote, that episode changed everything for us. The spike in numbers reflected that, our fire to build something different changed and finally we had a middle grown we could build on!
Q: You often blend serious parenting topics with cultural commentary on trending events. How do you decide which subjects to tackle, and how do you ensure the tone remains helpful for your listeners?
Gavin B: Every week something happens and Mike and I focus on topics that directly affect our community or deeply relate to it. We understood early on that every topic doesn't need our voice and our community shouldn't listen to us to answer every topic. We love directing our listeners to the experts in their respective fields
Q: The "#AskABlackDad" segment allows your community to engage directly with you. What are the most common struggles you hear from fathers today, and how do you encourage them to find their way through those challenges?
Gavin B: We absolutely love our #AskABlackDad segment! First, like you said it allows the community to engage with us, but more importantly it allows our listeners to feel a part of the show and conversation. No matter the topic or question we always lead with the reminder that we are not the experts but we love to share our experiences and connect our community with our pool of resources. This section of the show is cool because we get everything from entrepreneurship as a Father, the pathway through custody court, or adjustments to a new baby in the house
Q: You emphasize the importance of men sharing their stories. Why do you believe vulnerability is such a critical tool for Black men, and what does it look like to be "active" as a father in today’s environment?
Gavin B: Vulnerability is vital for all Men, simply because you don’t know who’s watching and who you’re inspiring to keep pushing. Our community doesn’t grow unless you can encourage the next Man, that he too can achieve more. While we have the internet to share these stories, the real work starts at home, with your children, your wife or the Mother of your child. Being active starts with leadership but allowing your family to grow on the foundation you have built. We encourage dads to be present and remind your kids that this is the norm.
Q: Looking forward, how do you see the role of the Black Dads Club evolving, and what is the ultimate legacy you hope to build for the next generation of fathers?
Gavin B: I’ll leave you with the mission of the Black Dads Club Podcast: We want to “help one million purpose driven Fathers with a safe space of insight and resources, while making a difference in the world with community building to experience success while not losing their soul.” As we drive this podcast in the future we want the Black Dads Club to be a space where Black fathers are seen, valued, and heard. Our mission is to build a strong community of educated Black men who are redefining fatherhood, supporting one another, and pushing back against harmful stereotypes.
