Traditional infrared systems generally control the cabin environment or operate at a preset intensity. SAFETY-SENSE follows a different approach: it focuses on the thermal conditions directly at the user’s back, where the infrared energy is applied.
Our objective is to establish a new standard for user-adaptive infrared systems and to make the technology available to US manufacturers, wellness operators, recovery facilities, hospitality partners, and selected OEM customers.
Q: Could you explain the core engineering behind SAFETY-SENSE?
Gerd Mattheiss: SAFETY-SENSE uses two contactless sensors positioned in the back area. The system continuously monitors both temperature and the user’s position relative to the infrared source, performing up to 120 measurements per minute.
These measurements are processed by the system’s controller in real time. If the temperature approaches a defined safety threshold, or if the user moves too close to the infrared source, the system can automatically reduce the energy output or place the relevant infrared emitter into standby.
Once the measured conditions return to the permitted range, the system can resume controlled operation. This creates a continuous feedback loop between the user, the sensors, the control electronics, and the infrared emitters.
The purpose is not to diagnose a medical condition or monitor vital signs. SAFETY-SENSE is designed to provide adaptive thermal control and an additional level of protection during infrared heat applications.
Q: How can SAFETY-SENSE be integrated into existing infrared and wellness products?
Gerd Mattheiss: The technology has been developed as a modular platform rather than as a feature limited to one particular cabin.
Depending on the product and installation, the system can combine contactless sensors, INFRAMEDIC infrared emitters, the ONE-CONTROL electronic controller, a simple illuminated start button, and the required installation components.
This platform approach allows us to work with cabin manufacturers, sauna producers, wellness-equipment companies, interior specialists, and OEM partners. Each integration is technically assessed because factors such as emitter positioning, distance, ventilation, materials, electrical configuration, and the intended application must be considered.
For the US market, product-specific electrical testing, certification, and regulatory requirements must also be addressed before commercial deployment.
Q: How have you approached usability?
Gerd Mattheiss: The core principle is that advanced technology should make the experience simpler for the user.
A person should not have to understand infrared wavelengths, power levels, sensor data, or complex menus. The system is designed around a straightforward operating concept: the user starts the application, while SAFETY-SENSE monitors the relevant conditions in the background and adjusts the infrared output automatically.
Visual status indications can show whether the system is ready, active, or in standby. The planned ONE-CONTROL web interface will add functions such as program management, software updates, system diagnostics, and service support without making the basic user experience more complicated.
Our discussions with users and business partners consistently confirm that safety technology is most valuable when it operates reliably without demanding constant attention.
Q: What role could SAFETY-SENSE play in the future of infrared wellness technology?
Gerd Mattheiss: I believe the industry will move away from static heating products toward connected and user-adaptive systems.
Future infrared equipment should be able to respond to the individual application situation rather than simply delivering a fixed amount of energy for a fixed period. Sensors, intelligent control systems, software updates, and remote diagnostics can make professional equipment safer, easier to maintain, and more consistent in operation.
