Industrial operations face a constant battle against sulfur and other impurities. As environmental regulations get stricter, energy and chemical producers must find ways to clean their gas and liquid streams. Failing to manage hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and mercaptans leads to equipment damage, costly downtime, and compliance failures. Companies need a reliable way to handle these byproducts without hurting their bottom line.
Merichem Technologies provides the answer. With over 50 years of experience, the company delivers proven sulfur treatment and removal solutions for the upstream, midstream, downstream, and renewable energy sectors. From skid-mounted vessel systems and proprietary equipment to specialized catalysts, they help clients maintain compliance and improve plant efficiency. In this interview, we speak with a Merichem Technologies Expert to discuss the challenges of sulfur management and how their systems keep operations running smoothly.
Q: Environmental regulations for the oil, gas, and renewables sectors continue to tighten. How is this changing the way plant operators approach sulfur removal?

Merichem Technologies Expert: As regulations around sulfur tighten, operators have had to make conscious decisions around treatment. These regulations have been prevalent in US and European refining for decades but have spread to other international facilities. Midstream operations and even renewable operators are falling under the same scrutiny. Flaring gases containing sulfur is gaining significant attention and treatment is becoming an expectation instead of a choice. Additionally, the increasing use of gas recovery for power generation has driven operators to scrub gas streams to ensure they can monetize those streams.
Q: You serve a wide range of industries, from traditional downstream refining to new biofuel facilities. How do you adjust your treatment solutions to fit these different environments?
Merichem Technologies Expert: We offer a range of treatment solutions tailored to the size and type of stream being treated. For gas streams with higher quantities of H2S, we offer LO-CAT®. For smaller quantities of H2S we offer an adsorbent solution. For liquids treatment we offer a variety of technologies using our patented FIBER FILM® equipment to treat both H2S and mercaptans. Our proprietary catalysts support each of our technologies. Our newest technology offering, EcoTreat®, also treats H2S but does so in a way that no solids disposal of any type is required. This is especially beneficial for operators whose produced water can be used as a feedstock, eliminating the need to provide water and carbonate in the treatment process. Operators then need only purchase our proprietary catalyst on an ongoing basis.
Q: Many operators struggle with the high maintenance costs of treating sour gas. How do your packaged, skid-mounted vessel systems help reduce these operational burdens?
Merichem Technologies Expert: More so than our vessel systems, it’s the adsorbents we use in them that truly reduce maintenance costs. Merichem’s adsorbents, unlike many others, do not bind together causing blocks of rock-hard material that must be hydroblasted out of the vessel. The form and composition used by Merichem’s adsorbent allow it to be free-flowing during changeout, reducing maintenance time from multiple days to often finish in one shift. This means significantly less downtime, less cost in crane rental or manpower, or payment to a company to do the changeout. The vessel systems themselves can be rented or purchased, allowing the end user the decision on capex or opex for equipment. Overall, the savings can be substantial.
Q: Dealing with spent caustic is a major headache for many petrochemical plants. What makes your caustic regeneration and treatment units a reliable option for these facilities?
Merichem Technologies Expert: Caustic is spent by treating mercaptans or H2S in any system. Caustic used to treat H2S is irreversibly spent. Caustic used to treat mercaptans can be regenerated and used in a loop with only a slip stream sent out to remove salts and contaminants, significantly minimizing the production of spent caustic.
For regeneration systems, Merichem offers different types of systems tailored to the client’s needs and specifications to ensure maximum regeneration with minimal back-extraction of disulfide oil (DSO), a product produced during the regeneration of the caustic. Merichem even offers a specific regeneration system that allows clients to produce ultra low sulfur products in their treatment system as all mercaptans are treated and exceptionally low levels of DSO are left in the regenerated circulating treatment caustic.
Merichem also offers treatment options for spent caustic streams, again tailoring the solution to the actual feedstock. Other companies may have one solution; Merichem has many. We have simple, low-cost solutions for easy-to-treat streams and higher pressure / higher temperature options for more difficult streams. We have well over fifty years of experience treating and handling spent caustics.
Q: Merichem Technologies has over 50 years of experience in this field. What is the most important lesson you have learned about keeping industrial sulfur treatment both effective and economical?
Merichem Technologies Expert: The end user must look at the experience, capabilities, and history of the company they are entrusting with their sulfur treatment solution. Some companies have only recently started their treatment journey and have not yet gained the experience that comes from decades of solving a variety of challenges. Others have purchased their way into the treatment business but lack any real history or experience with the processes and challenges involved. Sulfur treatment appears to be simple from the outside, but there are complexities in each type of system that are learned over years or decades of solving problems. Merichem has those decades of experience in engineering, design and fabrication and supports all our sales through the life of the product, offering the strongest technical services team in the industry. The goal and lesson have to be all about the customer: it must be the most effective solution wrapped around a fast schedule, whether a standard or customized design or specific specifications they must meet. Clients need a solutions partner they can trust to provide only what is needed with the experience gained over decades.
The insights shared in this discussion show that effective sulfur management requires more than just standard equipment. It requires targeted, process-specific solutions that protect assets and ensure regulatory compliance. Plant operators who invest in proven treatment systems can reduce downtime and lower their overall operating costs.
As the energy transition moves forward, managing impurities will remain a critical focus for both traditional and renewable fuel producers. Reliable sulfur removal technology gives companies the foundation they need to operate cleanly and efficiently. Merichem Technologies continues to lead this space, giving industrial facilities the tools they need to meet tomorrow's environmental standards.
