A line from Syd Stewart’s TEDxBeverlyGrove talk resonated so strongly that the event turned it into a speaker-series apparel release.
Seven words from a TEDxBeverlyGrove 2026 talk resonated hard enough with attendees that the event built a product around them.
Syd Stewart, Founder and CEO of Better Youth, delivered the line during her talk “Shift Happens” at the Marilyn Monroe Theatre in West Hollywood, under the theme “Reimagining the Possible.” Drawing on years of mentoring foster and system-impacted young people, Stewart argued that the label of being “broken” has long been placed on the wrong party.
“They are not broken,” Stewart told the audience. “The system is.”
In the weeks after the event, attendees and supporters kept asking whether the line would be made available beyond the stage. In August, TEDxBeverlyGrove responded with a speaker-series apparel release built around it, extending one of the event’s clearest ideas past a single afternoon.
The apparel carries the line on the front. On the back, the talk’s closing declaration: “Shift Happens. A foster youth becomes a better youth.”
With the full talk now public on the TEDx Talks YouTube channel, Stewart’s complete argument is available for the first time alongside the merchandise that grew out of it. She challenges the way society speaks about foster and system-impacted youth, arguing that responsibility for failure often belongs to the systems surrounding young people, not the young people inside them.
