TimelyCare Buys AI Coaching Platform Alongside to Reach Students Earlier

TimelyCare has acquired Alongside, a clinician-designed AI coaching platform built to help students manage everyday stressors before they escalate into more serious mental health concerns.

The deal expands TimelyCare’s student support model beyond virtual medical and mental health care, adding an early-intervention layer to help schools engage students more consistently across the care continuum.

The Alongside team developed the platform over several years in partnership with hundreds of schools to support students through common challenges such as academic pressure, social stress, loneliness, and uncertainty. The platform combines evidence-based coaching and skill-building with safety models intended to detect potential risk and connect students to human support when needed.

“Many students who appear to be doing fine are quietly struggling, and they’re increasingly turning to AI for help,” said Luke Hejl, CEO of TimelyCare. “The difference is that most tools they’re using weren’t designed with clinical input, safety protocols, or accountability. Alongside was.”

Hejl said the acquisition allows TimelyCare to move further upstream, offering support before students reach a point of acute clinical need.

Alongside does not replace therapy or crisis care. Instead, the company describes its platform as a coaching tool for everyday moments of struggle, with guardrails to identify situations that may require a higher level of support. Its safety approach includes risk detection, clinician-guided response frameworks, and escalation pathways that can involve school outreach or other human intervention.

The company also developed the S.U.R.E. framework — Safe, Understandable, Restricted and Ethical — as a standard for evaluating AI interactions with young people.

“We built Alongside to help students take the next right step in everyday moments of struggle,” said Jay Goyal, CEO and co-founder of Alongside. “Joining TimelyCare allows us to scale that impact through a platform that institutions already trust.”

The acquisition comes as schools and colleges continue looking for ways to reach students earlier, particularly those who may not seek counseling or formal mental health care. TimelyCare said the combined platform is expected to improve student engagement, strengthen navigation to appropriate services, and help institutions build a more proactive approach to student well-being.

Existing Alongside school partners will continue to have access to their programs and support resources as the companies move through integration planning. TimelyCare will share additional updates directly with partners as the team finalizes plans.

TimelyCare is a virtual care provider built specifically for education and is trusted by nearly 500 campuses across the U.S. Its services include mental health counseling, on-demand emotional support, medical care, psychiatric care, health coaching, success coaching, peer support, basic needs assistance, and self-guided wellness tools.

Alongside is used by more than 200 schools nationwide and focuses on AI-supported coaching for school stress, social challenges, and everyday emotional concerns.
