TOKYO (Shibuya), Japan, bonobo LLC announced an art exhibition featuring “ikasu,” a project that reimagines the stories and aesthetics embedded in vintage kimono and obi as contemporary textile art, to be presented at the lifestyle hotel sequence MIYASHITA PARK from March 20 (Fri, holiday) through April 19 (Sun), 2026.
The exhibition will showcase one-of-a-kind artworks created by ikasu textile artist Lena Okamoto and displayed throughout sequence MIYASHITA PARK, including the 4th-floor lobby and the café & bar “VALLEY PARK STAND.”
ikasu’s approach—honoring Japanese tradition while creating work designed to live in modern interiors—aligns with the sequence brand concept built around “SMART, OPEN, CULTURE,” bringing the collaboration to life in the cultural crossroads of Shibuya.
Upcycling with a “use-everything” mindset
In Japan, many kimono and obi that have fulfilled their role remain stored away and are increasingly discarded due to fewer occasions to wear them and the difficulty of long-term preservation. ikasu transforms antique kimono, obi, and even furniture into contemporary textile artworks, preserving each material’s history and memory while giving it new life.
A defining feature of ikasu is its pursuit of “all-upcycling,” including the use of antique paulownia chests as framing materials to minimize waste and maximize material value.
Art discovered on a trip—delivered to your home
The exhibition is open not only to hotel guests but also to café visitors and anyone exploring the neighborhood, offering an accessible way to experience kimono textile art as a new expression of Japanese culture. Works can be purchased by scanning QR codes placed beside each piece (availability varies, as each work is one-of-a-kind).
