Public fascination with Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) is at an all-time high. Recent congressional hearings and military disclosures have shifted the conversation from fringe theory to serious scientific inquiry. However, the sheer volume of information can easily overwhelm the public. People need a reliable source to separate fact from fiction and provide credible, evidence-based research on UAP encounters.
The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) continues to lead this charge as the premier civilian UAP research organization. This August, the organization will host the 2026 MUFON Symposium in Northern Kentucky, bringing together top investigators, military veterans, and researchers to explore the theme "UFO Revelations: Impact on Society and Science." We sat down with Bob Spearing, MUFON Board Member and Director of International Development, to discuss the upcoming symposium, the shifting landscape of disclosure, and what attendees can expect this year.
Q: The theme for the 2026 MUFON Symposium is "UFO Revelations: Impact on Society and Science." Why is this specific focus so crucial for the UAP community right now?
Bob Spearing: Since 2017 when the 2004 Nimitz Tic Tac Encounter video was released, the entire field of UFO research made a left turn. Whistleblowers began coming forward revealing in Congressional Hearings that the U.S. Government did indeed have crash retrievals and non-human biologics. Overnight, the UFO Community went from tin foil hat conspiracists to legitimate investigators saying “See! We told you so! Now do you believe us?”
Q: As Director of International Development and a Board Member, how are you expanding MUFON's global outreach and coordination with overseas investigators?
Bob Spearing: MUFON has always had a presence around the world. We have a cadre of over 700 Investigators in the US and abroad. Many of the witness reports in our 150,000 case database come from outside of the United States. We investigate every case, something the government with AARO or our commercial competitors do not do. Additionally, we are launching a real time alert network with units for purchase for our enthusiasts all over the world. These units detect a variety of electro-magnetic, barometric and radiological signatures when a possible UFO is in their range. These units will form a 21st Century network of real time alerts across the globe!
Q: This year's speaker lineup features highly credible figures, including military veterans like Commander Alex Dietrich and former Wright-Patterson engineer Raymond Szymanski. What unique perspectives do they bring to the event?
Bob Spearing: Ms. Dietrich was directly involved in the 2004 Nimitz incident.Apart from being a retired Strike Force Pilot, Ms. Dietrich is also an engineer. Ray Szyamski retired in 2011 as a Senior Engineer/Scientist from the Air Force Research Laboratory at ufologically legendary Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. When individuals like these, along with former intelligence officer whistleblowers, begin coming forward, it suggests that more scientifically oriented approaches to the UFO/UAP phenomenon are forthcoming!
Q: With your extensive background leading special assignment teams and investigating Ball of Light (BOL) phenomena, how do field investigators filter out drones and man-made craft to identify genuine anomalies?
Bob Spearing: Excellent question. Today, we are coming to recognize that the BOL phenomenon may be more complex than believed. In some cases there are paranormal claims of orbs turning into entities in close encounters, sometimes it may be a rare but mundane phenomenon called Ball Lightning and in some cases BOLs may actually be some sort of advanced intelligently controlled technological craft wrapped in a plasma field because plasma absorbs and hides radar signals from a military looking for aircraft signatures. A perfect camouflage.
Q: The symposium explores topics ranging from photo analysis and physical evidence to consciousness and high strangeness. Why is it vital to take a multidisciplinary approach to UAP research?
Bob Spearing: After 80 years of both public, private and military research, we believe that we are only scratching the surface of the phenomenon. The declassification of thousands of reports by the Pentagon, advances in photo and video analysis especially with the advent of AI, the millions of reports in various UFO Organization databases and books, and the advent or real time UFO tracking through a variety of new technology, together form a tapestry being weaved together to create a whole which I believe slowly will lead to actual possibly catastrophic disclosure. In the end, the answer may be positive but it may be something we wished we never figured out!
Q: For those attending the symposium this August in Northern Kentucky, what is the single most important takeaway you want them to leave with?
Bob Spearing: The paradigm is changing. There is no going back. The truth is out there and we are getting closer. If governments are reluctant to tell us the truth, whistleblowers, the public and advances in technology available to us all will hopefully lead us, the people, to the answer. MUFON is at the front line of this endeavor.
The pursuit of UAP transparency requires a unified approach rooted in scientific investigation. As discussed, the 2026 MUFON Symposium serves as a critical platform for bridging the gap between military disclosure and civilian research. By bringing together credentialed experts and dedicated investigators, MUFON helps the public navigate a complex and rapidly evolving field.
The ongoing conversation around UAPs holds profound implications for both society and science. As more credible evidence surfaces, organizations like MUFON will remain essential to processing and presenting the truth. Events like this symposium ensure that the search for answers stays objective, rigorous, and accessible to everyone.
