Black Lotus explores synesthesia, dreams, and the shifting nature of perception through atmospheric electronic music and surreal imagery.
What color is a memory? What shape does a sound take inside a dream?
Those questions inhabit “In a Room Full of Dreams,” the new title track from Black Lotus’s concept EP of the same name. Released September 14, the song moves through atmospheric synth-pop, dark pop and alternative electronic textures, exploring the strange territory where perception, memory, dreams, and imagination begin to overlap.
At the center of the project is synesthesia, the neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sense can involuntarily evoke another. Sound may be experienced as color. Words can suggest shapes, textures, or spatial forms. Numbers and letters may carry their own colors or personalities. For Black Lotus, synesthesia becomes more than a scientific curiosity. It offers a way of thinking about music itself: an invisible medium that can nevertheless suggest color, movement, texture, image, and physical space.
“I wanted the music to feel like entering a room where memories, colors, sounds and dreams all exist at once,” says Thai Black of Black Lotus.
That crossing of the senses extends throughout the EP In a Room Full of Dreams. “When Sound Becomes Color” explores sensory boundaries directly, while “Synthesia” takes its name from a deliberate play on synesthesia, merging interconnected perception with the project’s synthesizer-driven electronic language. The concept then moves beyond synesthesia into the equally unstable territory of dreams and memory. Dreams routinely perform their own kind of sensory rearrangement. A remembered voice can become a place. An object can carry an emotion. Time stretches, disappears, or repeats. Familiar rooms become unfamiliar, and images can seem to possess sound.
“In a Room Full of Dreams” approaches memory in much the same way. Its imagined room is filled with traces of another person; fragments of experience and objects that seem to retain emotional meaning after their original moment has passed. Absence and presence coexist. The past is no longer simply remembered; it is sensed. The production mirrors that dream logic. Layered synthesizers, electronic percussion and melodic vocals move through an atmosphere that is wistful, surreal, and occasionally dark. Synth-pop and alt-pop meet noir and rock-inflected edges, allowing reflective melancholy to exist without losing the music’s physical energy.
For Thai Black, the co-founder of Black Lotus, synesthesia is also personal rather than purely conceptual. A synesthete herself, she experiences color associations around people, sometimes appearing like differently colored auras. That perceptual world gives the EP’s exploration of sound, color, emotion, and altered perception an autobiographical dimension as well as an artistic one.
The project first opened this world through “Dreams of Snakes,” a vocal duet between Thai Black and Belgian musician Geert Coppens. Coppens, of Micrart and Micrart Studios, has roots in Belgium’s experimental electronic, darkwave and coldwave scenes through projects including Twilight Ritual, Autumn, Linear Movement and Faceless 50. “Dreams of Snakes” brings those electronic roots into contact with Black Lotus’s evolving world of gothic music, noir pop, and visual storytelling.
That visual world of In a Room Full of Dreams also reaches backward in time. Its imagery grew partly from Thai’s affection for physical records and album artwork; an idea Coppens connected with through memories of spending time in record stores studying album sleeves as closely as the music itself. It recalls an era when music arrived not only as sound but as a physical and visual object: artwork held in the hands and studied while a record played, eventually becoming inseparable from the memories surrounding the music.
In that sense, the room reaches backward into analogue time. Records become objects of memory. Images acquire sound. Music takes on color and atmosphere.
The project treats the boundary between inner and outer experience as something porous. A remembered voice can become a place. A color can carry emotion. A song can become a room.
