Papertools Brings Paper-Ai to Its Free Plan as It Builds on Its First Year

The Broome-founded platform is growing from free document tools into connected accounting, with a focus on helping small businesses start with proper books.

BROOME, Western Australia — Papertools marked its first anniversary in September by making Paper-Ai available through its free-forever Essential plan. The milestone brings together two ideas behind the platform: giving small businesses a practical place to start, and making their everyday financial work easier to understand.

The business began in September 2025 as PaperTools.io, a collection of free browser tools for creating invoices, estimates and other business documents. Owners could prepare and download a document without creating an account or entering card details.

For founder Adis Smajtic, that first version was also an opportunity to listen. Feedback through email, Reddit and conversations with business owners pointed to what people needed next: saved customer details, less repeated information and a way to follow what happened after an invoice was sent.

From individual documents to connected records

Those conversations helped shape Papertools into an accounting platform for sole traders, small businesses and small teams. Invoices, bills, expenses and payments connect to proper double-entry books, giving owners a clearer view of what they are owed, what they owe and how their business is performing.

The aim is to make that work understandable without asking every owner to become an accountant. Quick Journal, for example, guides users through familiar business events and creates balanced entries behind the scenes. Reports give owners and their accountants access to the records underneath.

Paper-Ai adds an assistant within that workspace. It can help with invoice drafts, answer questions about business records and guide users to relevant reports. Changes remain under the user’s control: the assistant proposes work for review rather than saving it on its own.

Built from firsthand business experience

Based in Broome, Western Australia, Smajtic brings more than a decade of experience across purchasing, procurement and business operations, alongside firsthand experience building and running businesses. His background includes supplier management, logistics and supply chain coordination. He holds a master’s degree in Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management from the University of Salford.

That experience informs the product, but so does listening to the people using it. Working alongside the Papertools team, Smajtic remains hands-on in product direction and design, with feedback helping determine what to build next.

A free starting point, with room to grow

The Essential plan remains free forever, with published usage limits and no credit card required. Paper-Ai is included within the plan’s allowance. Paid plans provide additional capacity and features as a business’s needs develop.

The broader ambition is to support people from their first steps in business through the stages that follow: finding customers, establishing routines and building a team. For someone turning a skill or an idea into a livelihood, organized records and a clearer understanding of the numbers can provide a stronger foundation for decisions.

Papertools wants to make that foundation accessible to sole traders, small businesses and small teams around the world. Its vision is to remain useful as those businesses grow, while allowing their practical needs to shape the platform’s development.
