LEOMINSTER, Mass. – A new children’s book is helping parents explain in vitro fertilization (IVF) to young children in a warm, hopeful, and age-appropriate way.
Elizabeth Drubin, who became a mother through IVF at age 44, has released Adrienne’s Dream: An IVF Story, now available on Amazon. As more than 1 million babies are born through IVF worldwide each year, and an estimated 13–17 million people have been born through IVF since 1978, the book offers an encouraging resource for families whose children were conceived through assisted reproduction.
The story follows Adrienne, a six-and-a-half-year-old girl who dreams of having a baby brother or sister. When Mommy and Daddy struggle to grow their family naturally, they seek help from their doctor and ultimately experience the miracle of IVF. Through gentle storytelling and vibrant, full-color illustrations by Seattle artist Melissa Hudson, the book celebrates hope, perseverance, and the joy of welcoming a long-awaited child.
Drubin, a city planner in North Central Massachusetts, drew from her own family’s journey to create the book. After having her first daughter naturally, she experienced secondary infertility. At age 41, she and her husband, Steve, turned to Boston IVF after being unable to conceive on their own.
Their journey spanned three years and included 54 medical appointments, three egg retrievals, and four embryo transfers. Egg retrieval involves fertility medications that stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, while embryo transfer is the procedure in which embryos are placed into the uterus. After transferring three embryos in July 2024, one embryo implanted successfully, resulting in the birth of their daughter, Hannah, in February 2025.
“I wrote this book because I wanted families like ours to have a simple, positive way to explain IVF to young children,” said Drubin. “Every child deserves to understand the incredible love, hope, and determination that brought them into the world.”
Today, Elizabeth lives with her husband and two daughters in Leominster, Massachusetts, where they enjoy hiking, jigsaw puzzles, and attending local festivals.
