Businesses struggle to maintain long-term success in a fast-paced market. Without strong leadership and clear strategy, companies often stall or fail during periods of growth. Executives need proven frameworks to guide their teams, optimize operations, and achieve sustainable results.

The Poling Group solves these operational challenges by providing expert consulting and leadership development services. Celebrating over 25 years in business, the firm has a proven record of helping organizations build resilient, high-performing teams. In this interview, we discuss the firm's history, the core principles of effective management, and how their strategies drive lasting corporate success.

Q: Celebrating 25 years in business is a major milestone. What foundational principles allowed the firm to maintain such long-term success?

Terry L. Poling: From the very beginning we have remained true to our mission and core values. Mission: “To help leaders achieve greater wisdom, effectiveness, integrity and fulfillment for themselves, their organizations, and the world-at-large.” Our firm is dedicated to helping leaders gain wisdom that transcends knowledge, effectiveness that exceeds the bottom-line, integrity that goes beyond ethics, and fulfillment that redefines success. Core Values: Customer-Focus, Win-Win Partnerships, Learning & Adapting, Integral Whole-Systems Approach.

Q: Many companies struggle to scale their operations without losing their core identity. How do your leadership frameworks help executives manage rapid growth?

Terry L. Poling: We require sponsoring leader(s) to enter into a long-term “Thinking Partnership” with us throughout the three main phases of organizational change initiatives including: 1) building readiness for change, 2) executing the change, and 3) building sustainability for the change. In working with the sponsor and his/her senior leadership team, we also employ a three-part strategy that we refer to as our “3-C Method” where leaders are responsible for the “Context”, “Conditions” and “Capacities” needed for any change initiative. “Context” includes the rationale, the objectives, the business case, the story behind the change. “Conditions” include the budgets, resources, processes, reward and recognition systems needed to support the change. “Capacities” include the knowledge, skills, competencies, training, job aids needed to execute and sustain the change. Such an approach ensures that leaders are consciously and intentionally leading the mechanics of change and, importantly, the cultural and social dimensions as well.

Q: The recent announcement highlights your enduring commitment to leadership impact. What specific traits do you believe modern executive as need to lead effectively today?

Terry L. Poling: In working with executives and senior leaders over the 35+ years I have discovered a list of differentiators that separate your exceptional leader from the average leader. This list of core competencies are shown below in pairs. Effective leaders demonstrate at least six of these sets, with the first set being the most important to success.

  • Self-Reflection and Self-Awareness
  • Mindfulness and Conscious Action
  • Remaining Open and Adaptable
  • Courage and Risk Taking
  • Judgment and Discernment
  • Emotional Mastery
  • Authentic and Genuine Representation
  • Tolerating Ambiguity and Managing Paradox

Q: Over the past two decades, market demands have shifted significantly. How has your consulting approach adapted to meet the current needs of business leaders?

Terry L. Poling: Over the past 20+ years, leaders have experienced far greater uncertainty, complexity, speed and competition in managing their businesses. This has required tremendous collaboration, learning and agility within and across all organizational segments. This has had a significant impact on our service offerings and approach. First, all assignments are now highly customized. Each project requires its own template. Second, cultural work has taken a central position in all change programs. Understanding cultural and social dynamics has much greater leverage than in the past. Third, one-on-one leadership coaching has replaced classroom training for rapid and highly-customized development of leaders. And, fourth, executive team development where intact leadership teams can assess and correct their own functioning and dynamics has increased. In the past, self/team reflection was not valued and generally avoided.

Q: Building a high-performing team requires more than just hiring the right talent. How do you advise organizations on creating a culture of accountability and continuous improvement?

Terry L. Poling: It starts at the top. Senior leader ownership and participation are absolutely necessary to building a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Most of my answers to other questions address the how.

Q: As you look past this 25-year milestone, what are your primary goals for the future of The Poling Group and the clients you serve?

Terry L. Poling: To continue serving clients in the most effective and impactful ways possible, which will include building on lessons-learned and best-practices of the past 25 years, expanded partnerships with other service firms, and an expanded use of AI.

This conversation highlights the true value of experienced leadership and strategic foresight. The discussion proves that companies achieve their best results when they invest in strong organizational frameworks and capable management. By prioritizing accountability and adaptability, businesses can survive market shifts and secure long-term profitability.

Effective leadership development will always be a requirement for corporate longevity. Consulting firms with a history of proven results offer the clearest path to achieving those goals. The Poling Group continues to set the standard for business excellence, giving executives the tools they need to lead with confidence.
