Q: You began your publishing career at the age of 73. How does your personal journey of starting a new chapter later in life influence the messages of resilience and courage in your books?
Cathy Warshaw: Starting my publishing career at 73 taught me that it is never too late to follow a dream. I had never written fiction before, but one night I had a dream that became The Obsidian Eye. That one idea grew into an eight-book series and the entire Sisterhood Sleuths world.
My own experience influences the messages in my books. Chloe, Lily, and their friends often feel afraid or unsure, but they keep going. That is what courage means to me. It does not mean you are never afraid. It means you continue even when you are afraid. I want readers of all ages to know that they can begin again, try something new, and follow their dreams at any time in their lives.
Q: Sisterhood Sleuths follows sisters Chloe and Lily Hastings across the globe. How do you balance weaving real-world history and geography with fast-paced mystery and suspense?
Cathy Warshaw: I want readers to feel as if they are traveling with Chloe, Lily, and the team. I do not simply add facts about a country. I make the history and locations part of the mystery. A tunnel might hide an important clue, or an old legend might help the team solve a cipher.
I research the history, culture, buildings, and traditions of every place in the books. Then I ask myself, “What secret could be hidden here?” This makes learning part of the adventure. Readers are discovering real places and history while trying to solve the mystery. I hope each book makes them curious to learn more about the world.
Q: The series goes beyond traditional reading by incorporating cipher challenges, interactive puzzles, and even a mobile app and podcast. Why was it important for you to make this a multi-platform experience for teens?
Cathy Warshaw: Young people enjoy stories in many different ways. Some love reading, while others enjoy listening, solving puzzles, playing games, or joining group activities. I wanted Sisterhood Sleuths to offer something for everyone.
The ciphers and puzzles allow readers to become detectives. The podcast, magazine, mobile app, music, and community activities give them more ways to enjoy the Sisterhood Sleuths world. They are not only reading about an adventure. They can take part in it.
My goal is to reach both boys and girls and help them use their curiosity, imagination, and problem-solving skills.

Cathy Warshaw: I teach these lessons through the characters and their experiences. I do not stop the story to tell readers what they should think. Instead, I show the characters facing problems and making difficult choices.
Chloe may need to lead even when she doubts herself. Lily may trust a feeling that others do not understand. Another team member may make a mistake or need to ask for help. Readers see the characters learning to be brave, work together, think carefully, and believe in themselves.

Chloe and Lily must make harder choices. They will need to decide whom they can trust. Every team member has a special skill, and they will need to work together to survive.

Cathy Warshaw: I want young readers to believe that curiosity is a superpower. You do not have to be the loudest, strongest, or bravest person in the room to make a difference. You simply need to ask questions, look carefully at the facts, trust yourself, and keep searching for the truth.
I also want readers to understand that no one has to solve every problem alone. Our differences make us stronger. The best teams are built on friendship, honesty, kindness, and respect.
