Kent Wuthrich: RVLock was founded by RVers, and most of our products have started by identifying something about the RV experience that we thought could be better. The Elevate Sofa came from a pretty simple observation: people invest a lot in their RV and their campsite, but then often spend the evening sitting in an uncomfortable folding chair.
We wanted to create something that felt more like actual furniture, but still made sense for RV travel. The goal was comfortable seating for two or three people that could be set up quickly and then packed down small enough to store easily in an RV
Q: Space is always at a premium in an RV. How does the Elevate balance the need for full-sized seating with the strict storage limitations of life on the road?
Kent Wuthrich: That was one of the biggest considerations from the beginning. Everything you put in an RV competes for storage space.
The Elevate Sofa packs down to approximately 18 x 12 x 9 inches and weighs about 16 pounds, but once inflated it provides full-size seating for multiple adults. We also incorporated the rechargeable pump directly into the system, so there isn’t another piece of equipment to store or keep track of.
For us, that balance is really important. You get the comfort and usefulness of a much larger piece of furniture without permanently giving up the storage space. We believe that a big part of the RV experience is connecting with friends and family outdoors. The Elevate Sofa makes that experience even better.
Q: Inflatable furniture has a reputation for sagging or puncturing. How do the military-grade 600D Cordura and dual-chamber design ensure the sofa withstands rough campsites?
Kent Wuthrich: We knew durability would probably be the first concern people had when they heard “inflatable sofa,” so we spent a lot of time addressing that.
Instead of having the inflatable material exposed directly to the ground and campsite environment, the air chambers are protected by a heavy-duty, double-stitched 600D Cordura outer cover. That helps protect the sofa from gravel, dirt, pets, and the normal abuse camping equipment receives.
The dual-chamber design also helps the sofa maintain its structure and firmness rather than feeling like a typical inflatable mattress or piece of temporary furniture.
We have done quite a bit of durability testing ourselves. We designed the sofa specifically for real outdoor use.
Q: Convenience is crucial for travelers after a long drive. Can you explain how the built-in rechargeable pump works to achieve a seamless, two-minute setup time?
Kent Wuthrich: Convenience was a major part of the design. The pump is integrated into the sofa and is rechargeable, so you don’t need an electrical outlet, extension cord, or separate pump at the campsite.
You simply turn the pump on and the sofa inflates in approximately two minutes. When you’re ready to leave, with the flick of a switch, the pump can also be used to help deflate it before the sofa is rolled back into its storage bag.
After driving for several hours and setting up an RV, people generally don’t want another complicated piece of equipment to assemble. Our goal was to make the Elevate Sofa nearly as simple as setting out a camp chair.
Q: The sofa includes features like twist-in ground stakes and a water-repellent material. How do these elements help users take the sofa beyond the campsite to places like beaches or tailgates?
Kent Wuthrich: We really wanted it to function beyond just a traditional RV campsite.
The four twist-in stakes help secure it on surfaces like grass, dirt, or sand, which is especially helpful at beaches, lakes, tailgates, or anywhere wind could become an issue. The water-repellent outer material also makes it much easier to deal with damp ground, morning dew, spills, and normal outdoor use.
We also added things like phone pockets, zippered storage pockets, and carry handles because those little details make a big difference when you’re actually using something outdoors.
Q: As you expand your lifestyle gear line, how does the Elevate sofa set the standard for future outdoor product innovations at RVLock?
Kent Wuthrich: RVLock will always be known first for RV security and keyless entry, but we see a much larger opportunity to improve the overall RV and outdoor experience.
The Elevate Sofa is a good example of how we want to approach that. We identify a real problem, design something specifically around how RVers actually travel and camp, use quality materials, and make sure the product is easy to store and use.
We already have additional inflatable products and new Elevate Sofa colors and patterns in development, and you’ll continue to see us expand into products that make RV travel more comfortable, convenient, and enjoyable.
