How TikTok Shopping in the U.S. Dramatically Outpaced the UK Market

Over the past two years, TikTok Shop has evolved from an experimental social commerce platform into one of the fastest-growing retail ecosystems in the world. While both the United States and the United Kingdom have embraced TikTok shopping, the scale and speed of adoption in the U.S. market has significantly outpaced the UK,  transforming TikTok from a content platform into a major commerce player.

The difference between the two markets is no longer simply about audience size. It is about consumer behaviour, creator influence, live shopping adoption, and the way brands are investing in social commerce infrastructure.

The U.S. Has Become TikTok Shop’s Largest Growth Engine

TikTok Shop launched in the U.S. in September 2023, and growth since then has been explosive.

According to industry reports:

  • TikTok Shop generated approximately $15.8 billion in U.S. sales during 2025
  • U.S. TikTok Shop sales grew by 108% year-over-year
  • Analysts project U.S. TikTok Shop sales to exceed $20–23 billion in 2026
  • The U.S. market expanded by more than 650% during TikTok Shop’s first 16 months (redstagfulfillment.com)

The platform’s momentum accelerated particularly during major retail moments. During the 2025 Black Friday and Cyber Monday period alone, TikTok Shop reportedly generated over $500 million in U.S. sales, with nearly 50% more shoppers purchasing through the platform than the previous year. Industry analysts now describe TikTok Shop as one of the fastest-growing commerce platforms in U.S. retail history. By late 2025, TikTok Shop’s quarterly global sales volumes were already being compared to major marketplaces like eBay. (wired.com)

The UK Market Grew First — But Slower

The UK was one of TikTok Shop’s earliest Western testing grounds, launching before the U.S. market. However, adoption was initially slower due to consumer hesitation around livestream commerce and wider operational issues across the platform’s early rollout.

The UK market has still experienced significant growth:

  • More than 200,000 UK businesses now actively sell through TikTok Shop
  • UK TikTok Shop sales increased by 50% year-over-year during Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2025
  • Daily live shopping sessions in the UK rose by 64%
  • UK daily TikTok Shop sales increased by 93% year-over-year (theguardian.com)

TikTok Shop has become particularly influential within UK beauty retail. In 2025, TikTok Shop reportedly became the fourth-largest beauty retailer in the UK, with beauty category sales growing by 60% year-over-year.(newsroom.tiktok.com)

Despite this progress, the UK market remains considerably smaller than the U.S. in terms of transaction volume, creator economy scale, and brand investment.

Why the U.S. Market Accelerated Faster

One of the key reasons behind the U.S. market’s rapid growth is the strength of its creator economy. American creators adapted quickly to affiliate marketing, livestream commerce, and short-form product selling, creating a highly scalable ecosystem where entertainment and commerce merged seamlessly.

Reports show that more than 100,000 affiliate creators are actively selling products through TikTok Shop globally, with a large proportion of high-performing commerce creators concentrated in the U.S. market. (redstagfulfillment.com)

Consumer spending patterns also differ dramatically between the two regions. Analysts estimate that the average U.S. TikTok Shop customer spends approximately $708 annually, with average order values sitting around $59 per purchase.(redstagfulfillment.com)

The U.S. audience has shown a much stronger willingness to make impulse purchases directly within the app, particularly across beauty, wellness, fashion, home products, and viral trend-led categories.

Meanwhile, major American retailers have increasingly treated TikTok Shop as a core sales channel rather than an experimental marketing platform. According to 2026 retail reporting:

  • sales from major brands on TikTok Shop grew by 97% year-over-year
  • TikTok Shop recorded over 103 billion U.S. searches with e-commerce intent during 2025 (modernretail.co)

This level of investment has strengthened fulfilment systems, creator partnerships, advertising infrastructure, and overall consumer trust.

Lessons From the UK Market

Paige Evans previously worked as Operations Manager for Outlandish, one of the UK’s leading TikTok Shop Partner (TSP) agencies, where she worked on launching and scaling brands across TikTok Shop during the platform’s early growth phase in Britain.

During her time there, Evans helped launch brands including Myprotein and JD Sports onto TikTok Shop, working across creator campaigns, content strategy, livestream shopping, and social commerce growth.

Having worked closely with brands during TikTok Shop’s early UK rollout, Evans saw firsthand many of the operational and strategic mistakes that slowed adoption in Britain, including overly aggressive sales tactics, weak creator-brand alignment, inconsistent livestream quality, and a misunderstanding of how audiences behave on TikTok.

“The UK market moved too quickly into hard selling before audiences had built trust in the platform,” says Paige Evans. “A lot of brands treated TikTok Shop like a digital QVC channel rather than understanding that entertainment is what actually drives conversion on TikTok.”

Evans believes the U.S. market benefited heavily from observing many of the UK’s early mistakes.

“American brands entered the platform with a far stronger creator infrastructure already in place,” she explains. “They invested heavily in affiliates, storytelling, and personality-led content from the beginning, which made the shopping experience feel far more native to the platform.”

“The brands that succeeded weren’t necessarily the biggest brands,” Evans adds. “They were the brands that understood TikTok culture fastest.”

Her experience in the space also led to discussions with representatives from ByteDance regarding creator commerce strategy and the future development of TikTok Shop across Western markets.

The Future of Social Commerce

TikTok Shop’s rise signals a major shift in how younger consumers discover and purchase products online. Entertainment-driven shopping, creator-led recommendations, and short-form video commerce are increasingly replacing traditional advertising models.

Industry analysts estimate TikTok Shop’s global GMV surpassed $33 billion in 2024, with projections approaching $100 billion globally by 2025–2026. (redstagfulfillment.com)

While the UK remains an important market for innovation and creator-led retail, the United States has rapidly become the centre of TikTok Shop’s global expansion, transforming social commerce from a trend into a mainstream retail channel.
