In Welcome to the World’s Worst Club, Greene steps out from behind her award-winning fiction pen name to share a raw, honest new voice on grief.
Grief has long been packaged in stages, timelines, and carefully chosen phrases meant to make loss easier to explain. Author and publisher Michele Leigh Greene is taking a different approach: stop telling people how they are supposed to grieve and start allowing them to experience what grief actually looks like.
Her new nonfiction book, Welcome to the World’s Worst Club: A Raw, Unfiltered, Surprisingly Funny Companion Through Grief, draws from Greene’s own experiences with profound loss and the awkward, absurd, painful, and deeply human moments that followed.
The book does not offer a five-step path to healing. It does not promise closure. Instead, Greene writes about the things that rarely make it into traditional grief literature: inappropriate laughter, anger, confusion, funeral disasters, family dynamics, the terrible things well-meaning people sometimes say, and the strange moments that become funny only years later.
“Grief doesn’t need another rulebook. It needs honesty, room to be messy, and permission to laugh when laughter is the thing that gets you through,” Greene says.
For Greene, the point is not to teach readers how to grieve. It is to sit beside them while they do it. “When grief leaves people without the words, I want to offer the ones no one else is saying. I’m not here to tell anyone how to grieve. I’m sitting beside them saying: this is awful. You’re allowed to laugh. You’re allowed to be angry. You’re allowed to have no idea what you’re doing.”
Writing the book also marked a public shift for Greene. For years, she wrote fiction under the name Constance Vaughn. Stepping forward under her own name allowed her to bring together the two sides of her creative life: the storyteller willing to explore difficult subjects and the woman willing to talk openly about what happens when life refuses to stay tidy.
That transition became the subject of her Influential Women feature, One Woman, Two Voices, which explores the relationship between Michele Leigh Greene and Constance Vaughn and the decision to stop separating the woman from the pen name.
Greene is also the founder of Palm Beach Proper Publishing, where she works with authors to shape, publish, and bring meaningful books into the world. Her larger goal is simple: create books and conversations that feel human, intelligent, and honest enough to matter.
Welcome to the World’s Worst Club is not a book about “getting over” grief. It is a companion for the people already inside it — the club no one asks to join, but almost everyone eventually enters.
