Mom, Dad, I’m Gay explores my journey as I tried to piece together my understanding of God’s word on the topic of homosexuality and overall sexuality. As a young man raised in Brooklyn, NY, I was very familiar with the lifestyle. I had been exposed and at times confronted with it but since it never had an impact on my life it was just something that happened to some people. Suddenly it was in my home and in my daughter’s life and my reaction to say the least was explosive.
I had not been raised in a Christian home and came to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ in my mid 30’s when my daughter was a toddler. She was raised in our then Christian home, had gotten married and had three kids. All three of her kids have autism, and her marriage fell apart for many reasons. I believe that during the stresses of life the enemy of our soul deceived her and she fell into a temptation that changed all our lives.
In trying to understand my reaction and my standing with the Lord, I turned to the Bible to seek God’s wisdom on the subject. The more I read the more convinced I became that the gay/lesbian lifestyle is a sin to the Lord. There was no way to reconcile this lifestyle with God’s word and accepting or affirming her choice was not an option.
While our relationship has been severed loving my child means I can still treat her with respect and dignity. She can still rely on her dad to come to her aid when necessary and she understands that I love her but not the lifestyle she has chosen. Loving my child, as our heavenly Father loves us while still in our sin, is what I do for my child as I pray continuously for her salvation. The Lord seeks us and wants us to turn away from our sin, I can do no less for my daughter, while not compromising God’s word.
At the time of her decision and choice I was working as an IT Manager for a Fortune 100 manufacturing company. Since then, I have retired and spend my time writing and volunteer at a local thrift store that supports global missions, spreading the good news of the gospel and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
