North Hollywood’s Super Q Center Charges EVs Without Plugging Into the Grid, and Undercuts Local Prices Doing It

The 32-stall fast-charging hub on Lankershim Boulevard makes its own electricity on site, serves every EV without adapters, and charges as little as 30 cents per kilowatt-hour in the early morning.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Most EV fast chargers depend on a utility hookup, which often takes years of waiting for grid upgrades. Super Q Center, which held its grand opening Oct. 22 at 5806 Lankershim Blvd., skipped that wait entirely. The station has no connection to the LADWP grid. It generates its own power on site, using natural-gas generators fitted with emissions controls, and stores it in a battery system that feeds the chargers.

That design is what makes the site unusual. Because it doesn’t need utility capacity, the center could put 32 fast-charging stalls on a single urban lot. Chargers on the site deliver up to 360 kW. The whole system carries UL certification, and the charging and metering carry California Type Evaluation Program (CTEP) certification.

Every EV, no adapter

The stalls are split evenly between the two plug standards: 16 NACS connectors for Teslas and other cars that use the Tesla-style plug, and 16 CCS connectors for everything else. Drivers plug in directly with no adapters, whatever they drive.

Pricing built around the commute

Super Q Center prices by time of day:

5 a.m.–9 a.m.: $0.30 per kWh

10 p.m.–5 a.m.: $0.38 per kWh

9 a.m.–10 p.m.: $0.48 per kWh

The early-morning rate is set low on purpose. It gives commuters, rideshare drivers and fleet operators a reason to charge before work, which is the slowest time of day at most stations. For comparison, a local dealership’s guide puts typical DC fast-charging costs in North Hollywood at roughly 40 to 60 cents per kWh. That puts Super Q’s morning and overnight rates well below the usual range.

Drivers pay through the QCharge123 app or with a credit card at the on-site terminal.

A place to wait, too

The site also offers vending machines, fresh-brewed coffee and an outdoor lounge area, and it is close to local shops, studios and restaurants. The station is open 24 hours a day. Drivers enter from Hatteras Street.

Grand opening

The center has been open to the public since mid-August and has built a loyal following with very little advertising. It holds a 4.9-star rating on Google from early reviewers. The Oct. 22 ribbon cutting made the opening official, and drivers who came during the morning event got a free charge of up to $25.

“We built Super Q Center to prove that fast charging doesn’t have to wait on the grid,” said Sergej Marojevic of Super Q Center. “We can open faster and keep prices lower, and drivers notice both.”

Super Q Center is the first of several planned locations in California.
