Hotel Indigo: Today’s travelers—especially our neighborhood explorers—are looking beyond traditional luxury; they seek authentic connections and want their journeys to have a meaningful positive impact. In a destination like Bali, where agriculture is deeply intertwined with the spiritual and cultural landscape, guests increasingly expect tourism to give back rather than just consume local resources.
While hands-on field immersion is a cornerstone of our program, we recognize that not every guest can physically join the planting or harvesting activities due to dynamic timing of the farmers. For now, this initiative is still championed by our staff to support local foundations and farmers directly, transforming everyday hospitality into a shared vehicle for community resilience and cultural preservation.
Q: This initiative relies on local agricultural practices. How does the program directly benefit the local farmers and the surrounding community?
Hotel Indigo: Every year, we take full responsibility for one complete rice harvesting cycle across 38 acres in Mengwi Village. By funding seeds, compost, labor, and land management, we help empower local farmers and preserve Bali's rich agricultural heritage. The harvested rice at around 300 to 350 kg was donated to a local orphanage every year, supporting both our community and its future generation.
Q: Sustainable tourism is a major focus right now. How does this rice farming experience fit into your broader environmental goals?
Hotel Indigo: Preserving Balinese Agriculture: By fully funding 38 acres of farmland through an entire harvesting cycle, we help protect green space from commercial overdevelopment and keep traditional Balinese agriculture viable for local families.
Q: September is IHG’s Giving for Good month, which includes staff activities like your upcoming coral planting on 18 September. How do these employee-led marine conservation efforts fit into the resort's wider environmental targets?
Hotel Indigo: Our September coral planting aligns with IHG’s Giving for Good month by turning hands-on marine conservation into active employee stewardship. This grassroots effort directly supports our long-term targets of protecting local biodiversity and regenerating Bali's coastal ecosystem.
Q: Beyond agriculture and marine life, the hotel actively repurposes waste, such as converting used chopsticks into furniture and building a recycled ogoh-ogoh for Nyepi. How have these circular economy efforts improved your daily operations?
