Vow renewals have become one of the busiest parts of the holiday season for Kona Wedding Officiant®. Couples traveling to Hawaii’s Big Island in November and December are setting aside an afternoon of their vacation to say their vows again, whether they’ve been married five years or fifty.
Founder Deanna DiMichele, who started the company in 2017, says the reasons vary from couple to couple. Some were married on the island and want to come back. Some are marking a milestone anniversary. Others never had much of a wedding the first time.
Everyone has their own reason,” DiMichele said. “I’ll have a couple who’s been married three years, and the next day a couple celebrating 50. Some got married here a long time ago and just wanted to come back. It turns a vacation into something they’ll actually talk about later.”
The Wedding They Didn’t Get The First Time
A courthouse ceremony, a rushed date, a budget that didn’t stretch far. Plenty of couples look back and wish they’d had more of a celebration. A vow renewal gives them a second chance at it, without the pressure of planning a full wedding.
The holidays tend to be when it happens. People finally have time off, the kids are out of school, and the usual routines are on pause. For couples who live somewhere cold, a week on the Kona coast in December is already appealing. Adding a short ceremony on the beach makes the trip feel like more than time away.
Most couples build the ceremony into a longer stay with snorkeling, dinners by the water, and drives along the coast. Some ceremonies are just the two of them. Others include children and grandchildren. Kona Wedding Officiant® works with each couple to shape the ceremony around their story and Hawaiian traditions they would like to include, such as the blowing of the conch shell, family lei exchange, Hawaiian ring blessing, or sand blending.
“Your wedding is one day. Your marriage is the rest of your life,” DiMichele said. “A renewal is a chance to stop and look at what you’ve built, and say out loud that you’d do it again.”
For couples planning winter travel, it’s an easy tradition to start, and one that some end up coming back for.
