Anouchka Bouglione: My family’s history and stewardship of the Cirque d’Hiver is part of who I am, and it naturally influences the way I see the circus. As a girl growing up I studied my father’s business and rose through working all the positions from performer to concessions manager to production director. For generations, my family the Bougliones have championed productions that show the artistry, emotion, and the connection between the performer and the audience. Cirque de Paris carries that spirit forward. We respect the traditions that came before us, but we also want to create something that feels alive and relevant today while still carrying the classic French charm. For me, honoring our heritage means carrying its spirit into the future preserving our signature Parisian style with exceptional artistry.
Q: Many modern theatrical productions depend heavily on special effects and massive arena stages. Why did you choose an intimate, one-ring tent format to showcase your ensemble of European artists?
Anouchka Bouglione: The classic single ring format allows the audience to feel the direct emotion onstage. There is something very special about being inside a circus tent. The one-ring format allows us to create intimacy and make everyone feel part of the performance. The audience is close enough to see the concentration in an acrobat’s face, hear the reaction of the crowd, and feel the energy of every artist. Sometimes, the smaller the distance, the bigger the emotion.
Q: Cirque de Paris combines classical disciplines like aerial acrobatics and clowning with contemporary elements such as BMX trick riding and laser design. How do you balance traditional circus heritage with modern technical performance?
Anouchka Bouglione: We showcase classical disciplines with a modern twist. Our show is paced for the modern audience while still highlighting the traditional circus artistry and Bouglione signature French touch. We bring the magic and artistry of the circus-rich traditions of France to North America with a one-ring family spectacle full of thrills, humor and elegance. For us, tradition and technology are not opposites and we seamlessly integrate the two without losing the classic French circus feel and focus on the human performer.
Q: Beyond your role as director and producer, you perform an intricate hula-hoop routine in the ring. How does actively performing alongside your family and international cast shape your approach to producing and touring?
Anouchka Bouglione: Performing in the show keeps me very connected to what is happening inside the ring and the reaction of the audience. When you are on stage, you feel the audience in a completely different way. You understand the rhythm of the show, the energy of the performers, and the little things that can make a moment work.
Q: Touring an international production across the United States and Canada involves complex logistics. What are the operational challenges of maintaining consistent performance standards and audience engagement across varied tour stops?
Anouchka Bouglione: Organising the logistics is one of the most challenging and rewarding parts of what we do. Every city has different logistics, audiences, weather, venues, schedules, and challenges. But the audience should never see those difficulties. When the curtain opens, the show has to feel just as polished and exciting as it did in the previous city.
The sophistication of our show extends to our Big Top tent, an engineering marvel that uses a complex system of hydraulics to raise and lower the tent in only 3 hours; one of the only structures of its kind in the world. The structure is designed with stability and strength to withstand weather conditions and ensure safety and security for all.
The day to day operations require an enormous amount of preparation, teamwork, and discipline from everyone in the company. We may be constantly moving, but our commitment to the quality of the show has to remain constant. With a little planning and a great team everything runs smoothly.
Q: With short-form digital media dominating family entertainment, what essential value does live circus performance offer today’s younger generation?
Anouchka Bouglione: Young people today are surrounded by screens and digital entertainment, it is more important than ever to give them in-person experiences that are equally exciting. In a circus tent, you cannot pause the show or replay the moment and the experience is real. You are there, together with your family and with hundreds of other people, experiencing something that is happening only once. That sense of wonder, anticipation, and human connection is something technology cannot replace.
