The Designers Collaborative Marks 10th Anniversary at High Point Market, Unveils Tech Platform to Empower Independent Designers

Kinnelon, NJ – The Designers Collaborative, a leading collective purchasing group for independent interior design professionals, is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a featured schedule of events at the Fall High Point Market and the upcoming rollout of a proprietary digital platform designed to streamline wholesale sourcing.

Founded a decade ago by Chief Executive Officer Heather McManus, The Designers Collaborative addresses a persistent industry challenge that has long restricted boutique firms and solo practitioners. Independent interior designers frequently face tight profit margins, as direct factory sourcing typically demands substantial minimum order requirements. Lacking bulk volume, smaller studios have historically been relegated to standard trade discounts of 20 to 30 percent, or forced into retail channels that compress earnings, complicate shipping logistics, and weaken competitiveness against large furniture retailers.

Through collective purchasing power, The Designers Collaborative has united approximately 500 member designers nationwide to unlock true stocking-dealer pricing across a portfolio of more than 300 manufacturers and vendors. This operational model delivers discounts of up to 70 percent off retail, helping small firms redirect capital into sustainable business growth.

McManus notes that accessing stocking-dealer tiers fundamentally alters the financial trajectory of boutique studios. By expanding margins, members have been able to hire design assistants, secure physical retail and showroom footprints, commission professional photography, and invest in business coaching. In one notable instance, a member fully funded a child’s college tuition through product margins generated from just two residential rooms.

To celebrate a decade of community-driven purchasing, The Designers Collaborative is hosting an active schedule of partnership events during the Fall High Point Market. The lineup includes an exclusive anniversary celebration held at Massoud Furniture and a curated inner-circle showroom tour in collaboration with Currey & Company.

McManus explains that the design industry continues to move away from competitive isolation and toward collaborative models. While manufacturers were once hesitant to engage smaller collectives, major home furnishings brands now actively seek partnerships with the organization. In return, members gain deeper product education through showroom tours, vendor roundtables, and direct brand exposure, establishing relationships that drive higher sales volume for manufacturer partners.

Alongside its milestone anniversary, The Designers Collaborative will launch a custom-built digital portal in late November, engineered by designer and technologist Nicole Heymer.

The new gated website replaces fragmented workflows across external groups and shared cloud drives with a unified operating environment. To help members quickly navigate products from more than 300 vendor catalogs, the platform introduces centralized search and filtering functionality. Designers will be able to sort items across vendors by price point, room category, furniture type, and aesthetic style, cutting hours from weekly sourcing routines.

In addition to catalog search tools, the platform centralizes member education and community discussions within a private digital workspace, transitioning the group away from third-party social media channels into a dedicated professional ecosystem.

Logistical support remains a pillar of the organization's purchasing structure. Orders placed through the network are handled by designated Account Holders, who are practicing interior designers themselves. For an 11 percent administrative fee, these managers process purchase orders, coordinate freight delivery, and resolve shipping damages and vendor claims.

McManus emphasizes that having experienced designers manage procurement ensures an empathetic, peer-to-peer approach to supply chain obstacles, allowing members to avoid logistical administrative burdens and focus on client work.

As the home furnishings sector faces shifting economic conditions, the organization provides a practical framework for sustainable firm profitability. By pairing volume-based wholesale access with dedicated backend logistics and modern search infrastructure, The Designers Collaborative continues to shape the future of independent design practices.
