Ann Bailey of Ann Bailey Studio solves this by offering luxury live wedding painting. She recently captured a Romeo and Juliet-inspired "Regal Reception" at the historic Osthoff Resort in Wisconsin, turning the celebration into fine art in real time. Today, we sit down with Ann to discuss her creative process and how she preserves these distinct wedding moments on canvas.
Q: The historic Osthoff Resort in Wisconsin provided a classic backdrop for this event. How did the venue's atmosphere influence your painting?
Ann Bailey: The atmosphere around that historic inn was really impressive. First of all, it’s a very big place so when you drive up, it’s impressive. I went in and immediately went to the view of the back gardens, which is where the wedding ceremony took place, and fell in love with the quiet grandeur. There’s a gazebo, lawn, a winding lake, flowers, stone paths, turrets and balconies- all of the elements that translate to a really pretty painting. Plus, it was facing a sunset, cloudy sky, so really impressive and inspirational.
Q: The couple chose a Romeo and Juliet theme for their "Regal Reception." How did you translate that specific romantic vision into your oil painting?
Ann Bailey: Actually, the couple had a royal-flavored theme, but the Romeo and Juliet aspect, I think, was all mine. As I stood at the easel painting, and they were introduced and came in and began their dance, I was struck by the romantic tempo and posturing… to me, It was just like a Montague and Capulet affair! I thought, I have to capture this because it’s so obvious to me!
Q: Live painting requires you to work while guests watch and interact. What is the most demanding part of painting during a high-energy luxury wedding?
Ann Bailey: Honestly, it is not demanding at all. When I was young, I was so shy I would not even show my mother my paintings, much less anybody else. Lol, I have progressed! So now to be painting and have people watch is very comfortable for me. And I do admit, that is probably unusual for an artist. I laughingly explain to people when they come up to talk to me that I’m not their usual “cranky Artist” who wants to be left alone.
Q: Couples have many options for wedding entertainment. Why do you think live wedding painting has become such a highly requested feature for luxury celebrations?
Ann Bailey: This is a great question. Luxury weddings are weddings that have extra. A live artist painting on scene is completely extra. Not only is the couple offering their guests a unique glimpse of creativity, but they’re also getting a great memory – A great active experience they are going to keep forever.
Q: You travel across the country for your clients. How do destination weddings change your approach compared to local events in Atlanta?
Ann Bailey: Being asked to do a destination wedding, and needing to travel, just means I have a little bit of an extra layer of planning. I have to take the same number of paints, brushes, cleanup materials, etc. no matter where the wedding is. Even when I paint locally within 20 miles of my studio, I am still packing the complete portable Studio experience to go on location and paint at that event. I have a lot of experience because I spent a decade going out and doing plein air painting before I began painting at Weddings, and it’s an acquired ability to show up, set up, start and execute a painting at any location outside of your home studio. So getting ready to fly to a destination, or even drive to a closer destination, is really just a small added experience to what I do for every wedding. Also, because I live in the Atlanta area, flying to destination Weddings is a pretty routine thing for me. ATL is a very convenient airport!
I have also learned how to pack extremely lightly so that when I travel and need to stay in a hotel for a night, I actually can have my toiletries and a change of clothing squeezed down inside my rolling Studio bag. As long as I’m dressed well for the wedding, I can really skimp on the rest of the trip wardrobe. You do it a few times and you get to be a real expert!
Q: What happens after the reception ends? Can you walk us through the final steps before the couple receives their framed piece?
Ann Bailey: Even though the wedding planning takes an eternity and the wedding and reception seem to be a highlight of a lifetime… It does come to an end and that is a point for me to transition from performer to performance.
I usually paint live for about five hours and complete a good draft of the oil painting. Normally, the reception is ending or has just ended by the time I leave, but even if it’s still going strong, I quietly fold up my portable easel and equipment and exit.
Back in the studio, a few days later, I begin perfecting the draft and adding layers and likenesses and Flower details and lighting, sparkles, etc. All this takes about three weeks. I let the couple know and they are excited, excited to be able to see the proof of the painting pretty much after they have finished all of the wedding celebrating, and the honeymoon, and are now back in their newlyWed lives.
So the painting is actually a renewal of fanfare around their special event. They approve it or ask for any edits and then I arrange a delivery or a shipment. I love to deliver the paintings in person because then I get to give the bride a hug, hear some fun anecdotes about the night that they experienced, and also see their reactions in person.
When I deliver the paintings, they are framed and ready to hang and I have signed them and added a special personal title and date and signature in graphite on the back of the canvas as well. It’s actually a very personal experience. I love getting a short video of the delivery and those are often my Instagram posts. A lot of times I just am meeting the couples somewhere at a coffee shop in the parking lot! As much as I would love to be having a bottle of wine or champagne opened at every reveal, the reality is that having a one-on-one moment to share the painting with the bride and groom for the first time once it’s finished is a powerful moment for both them and me. They are often brought to tears and I am always brought to happiness. This is the moment that I know that what I am doing is worthwhile.
