The writer of One Step Over The Line now intends to assist fellow true crime podcasters in expanding their listener bases.
Ken Behr operated inside a large-scale smuggling network for over twenty years before becoming a confidential informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration. Today he hosts Crime Nightly, a true crime podcast that explores cold cases, missing persons, and criminal investigations at crimenightly.com. Behr's journey into that world began in the 1970s, when as a teenager he operated out of his mother's home. What started modestly expanded into a major smuggling enterprise that Behr ran for more than two decades. During those years he traveled across the country by cigarette boat, competed in car racing, and traveled on private jets, collaborating with some of the world's most notorious smugglers and encountering everyone from movie celebrities to killers along the way.
Facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years behind bars, Behr opted to cooperate with the DEA as a source. He later recounted that chapter of his life in the memoir One Step Over The Line, a title inspired by the 1970s song "One Toke Over the Line." The book represents Behr's first published writing and covers both his personal story and the smuggling scene in South Florida during that period.

In the book's author's note, Behr also discusses dealing with post-traumatic stress linked to those decades—an experience he says took him by surprise after years of believing PTSD only affected others.
Behr's time inside federal investigations and his direct knowledge of large-scale trafficking now inform his work as a podcaster. He launched Crime Nightly to apply that perspective to unsolved cases, missing person inquiries, and conversations with researchers and formerly incarcerated individuals.
