New Android App Strikes Back at Spam Texts

SpamStop filters unwanted SMS on device, without replacing the phone’s default messaging app, and allows automatic reply STOP for political and marketing spam.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA : ACALI Studios announced today that it has launched SpamStop, an Android app that identifies and filters unwanted texts. SpamStop filters the full range of unwanted text messages: scam and phishing, unsolicited marketing, and political fundraising, which is especially relevant as the November midterm elections push this to a peak.

The approach is deliberately narrow. SpamStop suppresses notifications and logs messages for the user. The app allows users to turn on auto-reply STOP, opting out of future messages immediately. For nefarious texts involving scams and phishing, SpamStop has a one-button report to carrier feature.

The problem: growing numbers of unwanted SMS

With the development of digital Application to Person Gateways, unwanted text messages have exploded in volume. Scam and phishing texts impersonate banks, delivery services and government agencies. Marketing blasts arrive from businesses a customer contacted once. And political committees are exempt from anti-spam rules, allowing them to send fundraising appeals at scale.

As the volume of unwanted messages grows, new tools are needed, and many of the prior solutions are no longer effective.

  • Blocking numbers one at a time fails against high volumes, and senders rotate through multiple numbers.
  • Replying STOP is honored by legitimate senders, but for scams/phishing, it confirms attackers that the number is live. Instead, scams should be reported to the wireless carrier.
  • Prior-generation filtering apps require abandoning Google Messages, interfere with standard features, and may not catch spam texts obscured via Unicode or RCS.

How SpamStop works

SpamStop runs in parallel to the phone’s existing messaging app. When texts arrive, SpamStop immediately classifies them. If a message matches specific patterns, SpamStop suppresses the notification and logs the message; and, if desired, automatically replies STOP.

Five key features define the app:

  • Nothing is deleted. The original message remains in place. SpamStop suppresses the interruption, not the message.
  • Doesn’t replace your default messaging app. SpamStop deliberately does not take over the default SMS role, so Google Messages, RCS and existing conversations continue to work normally.
  • Matches patterns, not just keywords. SpamStop’s proprietary classifier scores multiple signals before categorizing a message as safe, or political, scam, marketing or fraud.
  • Contacts always get through. Messages from saved contacts are never filtered, and any sender can be added to an allow list with one tap.
  • Private by design. All classification happens on the device; SpamStop has no user accounts and never sends message data off your phone.
