Streamlining Dental Sleep Medicine: An Executive Q&A with Restfull COO Rio Radice

An estimated 39 million adults in the United States suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, yet roughly 85% remain undiagnosed or untreated. While dentists are uniquely positioned to provide life-changing oral appliance therapy, integrating Dental Sleep Medicine (DSM) into a practice presents significant operational hurdles. Complex medical insurance credentialing, unpredictable pre-authorization requirements, and tedious claim submissions often create administrative bottlenecks that cause dental teams to abandon sleep treatment altogether.

Restfull offers a comprehensive technology and billing intelligence solution designed to eliminate these administrative friction points. By combining automated medical billing workflows, chairside pre-authorizations, and guided claim documentation, the platform enables dentists to deliver effective sleep apnea care while securing reliable medical insurance reimbursements. In this Executive Q&A, Rio Radice, Chief Operating Officer at Restfull, discusses the challenges dentists face when navigating medical billing, the role of operational technology in healthcare, and how her team empowers clinicians to expand their practices.

Q: What inspired you to focus on solving the operational and medical billing challenges within Dental Sleep Medicine?

Rio Radice: There’s a statistic that really stuck with me: a treated sleep apnea patient lives, on average, eight years longer than an untreated or undiagnosed patient.

When I saw how many dentists were trying – and failing – to get reimbursed for what can be a truly life-changing device, I started to see the bigger problem. Some dentists were ultimately giving up on providing this essential service because the administrative and reimbursement challenges were simply too difficult.

That’s where I realized we could help on both sides of the equation.

My background is in business operations, so I approached the challenge differently than someone coming at it purely from a clinical perspective. We wanted to remove the operational barriers that were keeping dentists from offering sleep medicine in their practices.

If we can make that process easier, more dentists can provide this service, more patients can get the treatment they need, and ultimately, we have the potential to save lives.

And, I mean… who actually wants to wear a CPAP?!

Q: Many dental practices struggle to secure medical insurance reimbursement for sleep apnea treatments. What are the primary administrative bottlenecks holding clinicians back?

Rio Radice: Let’s start with the obvious: medical insurance doesn’t exactly make it easy for dentists to get reimbursed for sleep apnea treatment – or really for any service.

There are layers of rules and regulations, portals to navigate, and guidelines scattered across multiple websites and documents. It can be incredibly difficult to know what each insurance company actually requires, and the complexity of the system can create a real technology and administrative barrier for dentists.

The other major bottleneck is that most of the people teaching sleep apnea focus primarily on the clinical side. They teach dentists how to treat the patient, but not necessarily how to bill for the treatment properly. And honestly, that makes sense when many of the people teaching these courses come from a clinical background rather than a business or operations background.

When we created Restfull, we approached the problem differently. We built the software around the specific rules and requirements of each individual insurance company, so dentists have to follow the process that each payer requires in order to get reimbursed.

The clinical criteria alone can be incredibly complex. So instead of expecting dentists to memorize it all – or find it across dozens of documents – we built those requirements directly into the software code.

Q: How does Restfull simplify the medical billing process so dental teams can focus on patient care rather than paperwork?

Rio Radice: One of the components we built into Restful is what we call the Patient Journey.

The idea is pretty simple: Step 1 needs to be completed before you can move on to Step 2. Every step matters, and doing the right things in the right order is a big part of getting reimbursed successfully.

I know that can be frustrating for some offices. Sometimes people think, “Why can't we just skip this step?”

The reality is, we're trying to prevent a much bigger headache later.

Dentists are actually really good at following a process when the process is clear. So we laid out the requirements in a way that makes it easy to understand exactly what needs to happen and when.

Q: What role does chairside pre-authorization and guided documentation play in ensuring clean claim approvals within 30 days?

Rio Radice: There’s really no reason to operate in the dark – much like dentistry did before X-rays.

Restfull was built around proprietary systems designed to create a much faster turnaround on preauthorizations. In many cases, that process can happen while the patient is still in the chair.

And then there’s documentation.

We built a series of fail-safes into Restful so that the right documentation is much more likely to be completed correctly the first time. That means fewer surprises, fewer avoidable headaches, and less time spent trying to figure out what went wrong after the fact.

For me, that’s what good technology should do.

Q: Beyond software, how do hands-on coaching and team training contribute to building a sustainable sleep medicine program in a dental practice?

Rio Radice: Restful was really built on the foundation of what we learned through the International Academy of Sleep.

IAOS has understood for years that succeeding in dental sleep medicine – what we define as consistently doing 20 or more appliances a month – is extremely unlikely without the right coaching and guidance. In fact, without proper coaching, the odds of reaching that level of success were essentially 1 in 10,000.

And when you think about it, that makes sense.

You wouldn't expect a dentist to successfully run a practice with only one employee. So why would we expect someone to build a sustainable dental sleep medicine business entirely on their own?

That's why we've surrounded Restful with some of the best sleep dentists in the industry and partnered with leading vendors to provide the clinical guidance, expertise, and scalable processes practices needed to succeed.

Q: Looking forward, how do you see technology expanding the scope of medical billing integration inside dental practices beyond sleep appliances?

Rio Radice: At Restfull, our goal is pretty simple: make dentists’ lives easier.

We want to use every tool we have – technology, systems, processes, and the expertise we've built – to remove barriers. That may come in the form of AI efficiency, or it may simply involve faster process duplication. But we are excited to be part of whatever is next.

Integrating medical services into traditional dental workflows requires a clear strategy, reliable technology, and streamlined administrative support. By removing the complexities associated with medical insurance claims, dental practices can comfortably expand their care models to include essential sleep apnea treatments. Simplifying these backend processes ensures that clinicians spend less time managing paperwork and more time delivering meaningful health outcomes to their patients.

As awareness surrounding sleep health continues to grow, cross-disciplinary care between medicine and dentistry will play an increasingly vital role in patient wellness. Platforms like Restfull provide the operational structure and billing intelligence necessary to make this healthcare shift sustainable for practices nationwide. By helping dentists build profitable, low-stress sleep medicine lines, clinicians can help millions of untreated patients breathe easier and live healthier lives.
