The shadowy corners of America's criminal underworld remain largely hidden from the public eye. Organized crime, corruption, and illicit networks operate just beneath the surface of everyday society, impacting lives in unseen ways. For the average citizen, understanding these dangerous realities is nearly impossible without venturing into perilous territory. Fiction often serves as the safest bridge to exploring these dark truths, but it requires an author with a sharp eye for realism to make the danger feel palpable.

Author Jack Whalen tackles these grim realities head-on in his explosive new thriller, A Victim of Circumstance. By weaving an intricate narrative that exposes the hidden mechanics of the American underworld, Whalen offers readers a gripping and authentic glimpse into a world of high-stakes crime. In this interview, we discuss the inspiration behind his latest novel, the blurred lines between victim and villain, and what it takes to craft a truly suspenseful thriller.

Q: What inspired you to delve into the hidden depths of America's criminal underworld for A Victim of Circumstance?

Jack Whalen: After the unforeseen circumstances that influenced my life in subtle ways, I knew I wasn’t the only innocent citizen whose life has spiraled out of control by an underworld that dragged me into a web of crime I didn’t know existed. I was taking years of pain killers for my 3 back surgeries but one night I miss counted and took too many starting a delusional road trip to find my adult children which evolved innocently into a hospital stay. I know there are millions of Americans who have become addicted and their real lives have been altered in ways that lead them to circumstances that are foreign, doing things that take them off the path they had been living for years. Over time your reality is peeled away such that you are transformed into a different person physically and mentally with critical priorities that are puzzling and your comfort zone vanishes.

Q: The title suggests a complex relationship between your characters and their environment. How do you balance the concepts of personal choice and inevitable fate in your writing?

Jack Whalen: Dealing with a narcissistic ex-wife who abandoned our family I was a single parent with 2 teens. Behind the scene she faked her death and was convinced she could continue a life of murder without getting caught, adding a new boyfriend who lived like her. He was cloned to be like me and stole my inheritance, and they headed to Hawaii to live a good life destroying lives along the way. I found them in Oahu. With my girlfriend we headed to Hawaii to help me find them first to get my money but they stayed on the move and the Hawaii PD worked with me to find them as the murders accumulated. Finally they hid in a jungle commune on Hilo so my girl slipped into their life at hippie commune to get verbal confessions to their crimes from my ex-wife and beau.

Q: Writing an authentic thriller requires significant research. How did you ensure the criminal networks in your novel felt grounded and realistic?

Jack Whalen: At 79 I have lived multiple lifetimes in multiple places. There are compelling plots that I know are true so anyone reading Victim will know my story is not bullshit and although some scenarios seem bizarre my imagination is based on my real-life experiences keeping readers tethered to parts of their world. Nothing is unbelievable – I’m a realist so the entire story is part memoir with enough compelling plots to blend my story into a contemporary adventure.

Q: Protagonists in this genre are often deeply flawed. How did you approach crafting a lead character that readers can root for despite their dark surroundings?

Jack Whalen: My protagonist is not deeply flawed he’s learning about the underbelly of society he didn’t know existed – he’s vulnerable, searching for answers to why his life has imploded, He is a real American man – educated, athletic, kind, and cares about his fellow man. He is a victim of circumstances – caught in a web of doctor scripts, a two year divorce after a loving 21 year marriage, a stolen inheritance, a desire to right others’ criminality – finding himself in surroundings and situations he never knew existed – real or imagined he doesn’t have the tools to effect change all he can do is expose the criminality.

Q: Tension and pacing are critical in an explosive thriller. What is your specific process for keeping the reader on the edge of their seat from chapter to chapter?

Jack Whalen: One book reviewer suggested my chapters read like a TV series – fast moving from one chapter to the next. My story is not about one incident. I have spread a series of bizarre circumstances throughout most chapters as I spend enough time creating the people and settings that give readers a sense of environment that forces them to question their own history whether it’s love, deceit, murder, addiction, family dysfunction, fear, criminal lifestyles, with a righteous conclusion. But as readers move through the chapters most will be driven to wonder what’s next as I’ve convinced them – it ain’t over till it’s over.

Q: What is the main theme or lingering thought you want readers to walk away with after finishing the book?

Jack Whalen: No matter how you live there is an underbelly in our society consisting of toxic people who live outside the rule of law even the basic human conventions. While your life seems normal the criminal element never rests sucking vulnerable people into the fringes of questionable moral behavior. We each need to rely on “gut feelings”, risk/reward analysis, right versus wrong, past experiences, finding trustworthy people for help, education all without being fearful and paranoid. Use personal wisdom to decide what you can control, what you can’t, and stay aware of challenges in their world which is in a constant state of change. For some my story will be educational while others will realize – you are not alone.

This conversation highlights the intricate work required to craft a compelling and realistic thriller. Whalen proves that exploring the dark underbelly of society is not just about shock value, but about understanding the human condition under extreme pressure. By focusing on characters trapped in impossible situations, the narrative forces readers to question their own moral boundaries and the unseen forces at play in society.

As the thriller genre continues to evolve, audiences will always crave stories that expose the hidden truths of modern life. Authors who seamlessly blend meticulous research with pulse-pounding suspense will continue to captivate readers everywhere. A Victim of Circumstance firmly establishes Jack Whalen as a master storyteller capable of bringing America’s darkest secrets into the light.
